PLYMOUTH, ENGLAND, March 18, 2010
/24-7PressRelease/ -- PIONEERING eco-friendly search engine Ecosia was launched on December 7, 2009 by a team led by founder Christian Kroll, 26, from Lutherstadt Wittenberg, Germany. Ecosia has quickly built up a global audience of more than 100,000 users worldwide and processes 300,000 search requests every day.
Its searches are powered by Yahoo and Bing, who both provide Ecosia with high-quality search results and sponsored links, which generate all its income. About 80% of this revenue goes towards a rainforest protection project run by the World Wide Fund For Nature (WWF).
The total amount donated already exceeds 26,000 Euros. This equates to 43 square kilometers of protected rainforest - an area almost the size of Manhattan Island.
Constanze Oelighoff, Director of Internet at WWF Germany, says:
"The idea behind Ecosia is pretty smart. Moving about the internet without a search engine has become all but impossible. And being able to protect the environment while surfing the web - free of charge and effort to top it off - is right up the users' alley."
The highlight of Ecosia's first 100 days was its participation at CeBIT, the world's largest computer expo. Additionally, Ecosia has already seen its first site relaunch. A professional video animation now explains the concept of Ecosia, the FAQs have been extended and the first receipts for donations to the WWF are online. The goal is to provide users with as much transparency as possible.
On March 27 Ecosia will join this year's Earth Hour - a symbolic event seeking to raise awareness for the need of binding agreements when it comes to climate protection. The lights will therefore be turned off for an hour in several thousand cities. Ecosia initiated the participation of Lutherstadt Wittenberg, the founder's hometown.
