Education doesn't stop because schools close
Royal Albert Hall helping to deliver on the promise of Digital Britain

    LONDON, ENGLAND, January 17, 2010 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Showtime, the new e-learning resource launched this week at BETT by the Royal Albert Hall, experienced overwhelming interest from schools, home-educators and even institutions as far away as Sweden.

In the first few days of its launch over 50 successful downloads have been completed with significant engagement expected for this free learning resource. When much of the country is experiencing significant problems due to the 'adverse weather conditions' and many schools close, Showtime is already ensuring students do not miss out on valuable education.

"Sometimes schools have to close but that shouldn't mean that education must stop," said Alastair Tallon, Head of Learning & Participation at the Royal Albert Hall. "Schools and educators will be required to report the functional skills of their pupils from September. Closures and interruption to lessons are not going to be taken into account. Digital Britain needs to be demonstrated in education as well as in the workplace. Over the past decade industries have worked hard to provide staff with flexible working conditions and opportunities to work from home. Children shouldn't be forgotten. By encouraging students to engage during the snow days with free educational resources they can download from home, opportunities for long-term learning are more optimistic."

Showtime provides support to both teachers and home-schooled pupils to help place functional skills into context by showing how English, Maths and ICT work behind the scenes at the world-famous entertainment venue. The Showtime resource, downloadable to any PC, is an interactive multimedia programme that demonstrates how the Royal Albert Hall staff, in a variety of roles, use elements of English, Maths and ICT in every working day. Each Showtime unit introduces a member of the Hall's staff and explains the jobs they do. From learning about the importance of grammar and punctuation in the marketing department, to using Maths equations to solve lighting problems, the visually attractive resources use real people, in real work environments, solving real problems.
