Educational Social Card Game OPTION PLAY Now Available

Small steps go places inc. launches fun new game to help students prepare for the transition to college.

NEW YORK, NY, March 26, 2017 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Small Steps Go Places Inc. announces the launch of its social card game OPTION PLAY. Tailored for first-year college students and high school seniors the easy-to-use, fun-to-play card game helps students negotiate the transition to college.

The game is player-run and can be used independently by students or families. In most cases, a session leader is present to observe and facilitate a powerful, relevant discussion. Session leaders can include resident advisors (R.A.s), guidance counselors at the high school and college levels, and other trusted leaders who work with students facing this transition. OPTION PLAY is perfect for use during orientation and first-year experience programs, for example.

At the core of OPTION PLAY are 30 Scenario cards, which present open-ended, real-life situations that new college students will face. Playing the game requires making choices, reading others' body language, and taking calculated risks, all while laughing at oneself in a non-judgmental and low-risk setting. OPTION PLAY allows young people to have fun while they discuss topics such as making judgment calls, defending personal boundaries, communicating with unfamiliar people, tolerating discomfort, and not being part of the herd.

"Think how much better it is to learn to make choices in a simulated setting, among your peers, and see the possible ramifications, rather than doing it in real time and living with the consequences," says Genevieve Griffin, CEO of Small Steps Go Places Inc. and creator of OPTION PLAY. "It can feel scary and new to have that first uncomfortable encounter with a roommate or face an intimidating professor. But these kinds of challenges may actually be familiar situations in disguise. OPTION PLAY reveals these secrets to college-bound students, before they find themselves there in real life."

"When my students played the game, it was revealed that some of them were anxious about what college would actually be like," says Lori Phillips, Guidance Counselor at Caro High School, a public school in Caro, Michigan. "OPTION PLAY gave me a tool to foster a realistic discussion with my college-bound seniors. And it was fun to play, as well as educational."

"I used OPTION PLAY in the second semester of my senior guidance curriculum to help start the conversation about real issues students will face when they get to college," says Erica Keough, School Counselor at Fordham Preparatory School, an all-male Jesuit high school in Bronx, New York. "The students were not only engaged, they had a great deal of fun! And it gave us a springboard to discuss the issues in more depth. I highly recommend OPTION PLAY to any young person who is interested in learning more about campus life."
