At the University of Evansville, Dr. Barrett earned a Bachelor of Science in Nursing, summa cum laude, a Master of Arts in Education, and a Master of Science in Nursing. She then earned a PhD in Nursing at New York University (NYU). She earned certificates from the Gestalt Institute for Psychotherapy, the American Institute for Mental Imagery, the University of Maryland, and certification from the American Nurses Association in Psychiatric and Mental Health Nursing.
In Evansville, IN, she served as Assistant Professor of Nursing at the University of Evansville, and was a part-time staff nurse at Welborn Baptist Hospital Psychiatric Units, and was camp nurse at Camp Ondessonk one summer.
After moving to New York City's Greenwich Village in 1976 and beginning doctoral studies at NYU, she also fulfilled a long-term dream of working at Bellevue Psychiatric Hospital where she was a float charge nurse on their 12 units.
Dr. Barrett later was an Adjunct Professor at City College of the City University of New York (CUNY) and an Assistant Professor at Adelphi University. In 1982, nearing completion of doctoral studies, she accepted a position at The Mount Sinai Medical Center where she served in various roles including Assistant Director of Nursing and Director of the Divisions of Clinical Evaluation and Nursing Standards.
In 1986, Dr. Barrett returned to academia as Associate Professor of Nursing at Hunter-Bellevue School of Nursing, Hunter College, CUNY. There she continued the development and research of The Barrett Power Theory and the Power as Knowing Participation in Change Tool (PKPCT). By the time Dr. Barrett was promoted to full professor in 1994, she had edited or co-edited four published books. She was editor of Visions of Rogers' Science-Based Nursing that won an American Journal of Nursing's Book of the Year Award. After serving as Director of the Graduate Program, Dr. Barrett became Coordinator of the Center of Nursing Research.
Some of her numerous honors and awards include: elected Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing, FAAN; Distinguished Nurse Researcher Award from The New York State Nurses Association Foundation, the Distinguished Nursing Alumnus Award from New York University; the Innovative Nursing Practice Award from New York University; an issue of Nursing Science Quarterly dedicated to The Barrett Power Theory; her article, "Power as Knowing Participation in Change: What's New and What's Next" received the 2010 Nursing Science Quarterly Best Paper Award from Sage Publications; Who's Who in America, Who's Who of American Women, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare and Who's Who in the World. She is a member of numerous organizations, including the honor societies of Phi Kappa Phi and Sigma Theta Tau International.
Dr. Barrett has parlayed her knowledge into many creative works throughout the course of her career. In addition to the edited books, she has written chapters for four monographs, 21 book chapters, 27 articles in professional journals, 86 presented papers, and 11 completed research studies as principal investigator (PI) or Co-PI. Colleagues have completed over 100 research studies using The Barrett Power Theory and/or The Power as Knowing Participation in Change Tool (PKPCT).
As Professor Emerita since 2001, she continues the private practice she began in 1980 called Health Patterning, the alternative form of psychotherapy she created. She was a co-founder and first president of the Society of Rogerian Scholars, as well as co-founder and co-president of The Power-Imagery Program (PIP), LLC. The continuing work for The Barrett Power Theory and the Power as Knowing Participation in Change Tool (PKPCT) has been officially transferred to Violet Malinski, PhD, RN.
Currently, Dr. Barrett is writing a book on The Barrett Power Theory for the general public as well as writing her memoir.
