Emily Hoppmann, DVM, Inducted into Worldwide Who's Who for Excellence in Veterinary Medicine

Emily C. Hoppmann received her Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine magna cum laude

ELGIN, SC, June 10, 2013 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Veterinarian Emily C. Hoppmann has been recognized by Worldwide Who's Who for showing dedication and leadership in veterinary services for small animals and exotics animals, from cats and dogs to monkeys and lizards.

Best noted for her expertise in the treatment and care of exotic animals and primates, Dr. Hoppmann joined the Elgin Veterinary Hospital team in 2010 and became the practice owner in 2011. She has worked in the same wonderful Greater Columbia Veterinary community since high school, when she started as a kennel worker. "It was wonderful to return to the area as an associate veterinarian and now be lucky enough to be a practice owner. As a practice owner, with an amazing staff, I am able to create the unique culture at Elgin Veterinary Hospital I have always dreamed of. My dream has always been to be able to offer the very best medical and surgical care for all species, in a warm, family-like environment." she explained in an interview with Worldwide Who's Who. Elgin Veterinary Hospital is a place where all family members, two- and four-legged, always feel welcome and at home. "It is a priority not only to provide the best care possible, but to also ensure the happiness of every person and animal that walks through my door," said Dr. Hoppmann.

As an undergraduate student at the University of South Carolina, where she studied Biology and Chemistry, Dr. Hoppmann worked not only in the veterinary care, but in a population genetics research laboratory. She continued her involvement in a research project at USC, which discovered a cryptic (or new) species of Hammerhead sharks. These results were later published in the Journal of Marine Biology -- and that was just the start of Dr. Hoppmann's multiple publications over the years.

In 2000, Dr. Hoppmann was one of fifteen students across the nation to be accepted into veterinary school without completing her undergraduate degree. She completed her veterinary training at the University of Georgia, where she specialized in small animal and exotic animal medicine and surgery, and received her Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine magna cum laude. She was later awarded her Bachelor's degree in Biology from the University of South Carolina magna cum laude.

Dr. Hoppmann worked in private practice for several years before returning to school to complete a year-long internship in Exotic Animal Medicine and Surgery at Stahl Exotic Animal Veterinary Services in Vienna, Va. "Once out in private practice, I made the decision to return to academia to advance my skills and knowledge base in exotic animals. Completing a very focused internship and continuing daily to remain up-to-date on the latest advancements in medicine and surgery for all species allows me to be the best doctor I can be for all species," said Dr. Hoppmann.

Dr. Hoppmann is an active member of the American Veterinary Medicine Association, South Carolina Veterinary Medicine Association, Greater Columbia Veterinary Medicine Association (where she also has served as president and vice president), American Animal Hospital Association and multiple Small Business Associations. She also routinely writes educational articles for pet owners for a number of publications from Southern Paws and Tails to Women's Day.

In addition to her work at Elgin Veterinary Hospital, she serves as the pre-professional pre-veterinary adviser at the University of South Carolina. "As soon as I returned to Columbia, I approached the university about adding a veterinary aspect to its pre-professional department to offer guidance to the students pursuing a career in veterinary medicine," said Dr. Hoppmann. This was a much needed addition to the pre-professional office, so the program was started in 2006 and Dr. Hoppmann has happily been helping students join the profession since then.

Elgin Veterinary Hospital offers full medical and surgical services for small and exotic animals Monday through Saturday. Though the veterinary care offered is primarily based on the western art of medicine, which is the traditional modality people in the United States are accustomed to, Dr. Hoppmann has also studied eastern or alternative medicine in order to have even more options when providing care to patients. The services offered at Elgin Veterinary Hospital include wellness care and disease prevention, treatment or management of ill pets, acupuncture, behavioral and nutritional counseling, blood work, boarding and grooming, critical and geriatric care, oral care and surgery, heartworm prevention and treatment, immunizations, microchip implants, pain management, digital radiology, and full surgical care.
