The FDA has ordered recalls of several food products containing the flavoring hydrolyzed vegetable protein (HVP) due to possible Salmonella contamination. The popular flavor enhancer HVP is added to a wide range of processed foods such as creamy dressings, sauces, soups, snacks, stuffing, gravies and prepared or pre-packaged meals.
The Salmonella contamination was detected several weeks ago in HVP produced by a Nevada company and made known to the FDA. Since then, the FDA has confirmed the Salmonella contamination and has recalled all HVP produced by the facility since September 17, 2009. FDA associate commissioner for food protection, Jeff Farrar said at a press conference, "We don't know precisely how large this recall will get, but we expect this to get larger over the next several days to several weeks."
Salmonella is a common food borne pathogen that can cause severe illnesses, including fever, abdominal cramps and diarrhea. Salmonella poisoning can have serious and even fatal effects on those with a low immune system, such as children and the elderly. According to recent reports, Salmonella found in the HVP produced by the company in question can be responsible for contaminating thousands of processed food products that are distributed across the country.
