An associate professor in the The Wistar Institute Gene Expression and Regulation Program, as well as an adjunct associate professor in the department of biochemistry and molecular biology at the University of Pennsylvania, Dr. Skordalakes has been affiliated with the Wistar Institute for the past 10 years. He initially began his career as an assistant professor at the University of Pennsylvania in 2007, having taught courses including Biophysical Chemistry and Advanced Cancer Biology.

The Wistar Institute is an international leader in biomedical research with special expertise in cancer research and vaccine development. Founded in 1892 as the first independent nonprofit biomedical research institute in the United States, Wistar has held the prestigious Cancer Center designation from the National Cancer Institute since 1972. Wistar discoveries have led to the development of vaccines for rabies, rubella, and rotavirus, the identification of genes associated with breast, lung, and prostate cancer, and the development of monoclonal antibodies as well as other significant research technologies and tools.

In addition to teaching in the classroom, Dr. Skordalakes has served as a presenter and lecturer in his field. He has authored and co-authored many articles in professional and academic journals, including in the Journal of Biological Chemistry, Nature, Science Signaling, Structure, Cell, and many others. Furthermore, he has contributed chapters to several books for other authors, and has been an ad-hoc manuscript reviewer numerous times on various topics as well. A patentee in his field, Dr. Skordalakes was recently nominated for a Howard Hughes Medical Institute Award in 2014, and received a 2014 Pilot Project in Drug Discovery Award granted by The Wistar Institute of Anatomy and Biology. Additionally, he was the recipient of a 2012 Etter Award by the American Crystallographic Association, a 2009 Emerald Foundation Award, and a V Foundation for Cancer Research Award in 2008.

Dr. Skordalakes received his undergraduate degree with honors at Anglia Ruskin University in 1991, a Master of Science in Chemical Research at the University of London in 1992, and was a trainee in synthetic chemistry in the peptide synthesis division of TRI between 1993 and 1994. In 2000, he completed a PhD at the University of London, and completed postgraduate work at the University of California at Berkeley from 2001 to 2006. He is a member of the American Cancer Society, and the American Crystallographic Association.
