CHICAGO, IL, February 10, 2010 /24-7PressRelease/ -- The type of dentistry that focuses on the soft tissue and root of the tooth is known as endodontics. Endodontics or endodontic therapy is used to save a tooth whose root is filled with disease or decayed pulp through the commonly known procedure the "root canal."

Endodontic Therapy
To save a tooth or several teeth with decay or disease in the roots, the procedure needed is endodontic therapy, or root canal therapy. This is performed when damage or decay has spread from the outside of the tooth into the inner part where the pulp, or soft tissue, is located. This can occur when the tooth is injured or broken, a filling is cracked, repeated fillings are needed in one tooth, or gum disease has spread.

In a healthy tooth, the soft tissue has needed nutrients, blood vessels and nerves to support the structure. If tooth decay or disease gets to the pulp, it must be removed in an effort to keep the entire tooth from dying.

A root canal removes the diseased tissue, cleans out the canals of the affected tooth, and then seals the canal to keep the tooth from being damaged further. This is done by drilling through the top or rear of the tooth to get to the pulp. Once the pulp has been removed, the tooth is still able to receive nourishment from the surrounding gum tissue.

A dental crown is usually placed over the tooth to strengthen the structure after a root canal.

Tooth Extraction Alternative to Endodontic Therapy
Because the diseased pulp can lead to further complications, if endodontic therapy is not done, the only alternative is to extract the tooth. When this occurs, a dental implant or bridge will replace the extraction to keep the remaining teeth from moving toward the gap and affecting your bite.

It is extremely important to keep up with your biannual dental visits to make sure your teeth, gums, and even roots are healthy.
