Ent In Hackensack Offers Tips For Sinus And Nasal Complications

Dr. Christopher Shaari, Hackensack ENT, focuses on his patients' sinus conditions by offering valuable sinus and nasal information.

HACKENSACK, NJ, January 27, 2013 /24-7PressRelease/ -- During the winter months, many patients complain of sinus congestion. While many experience relief within a week, others might be unable to find relief for their symptoms. Dr. Christopher Shaari, ENT in Hackensack, understands that chronic sinus complications are troubling his patients, and informs his patients that he is available to help find the relief for their symptoms.

"If you have been suffering from sinus problems for more than 12 weeks, it could be sinusitis. By understanding common sinus problems, I hope that I can further help my patients receive the care they need to breathe easily again," said Dr. Christopher Shaari, Hackensack ENT.

Acute bacterial sinusitis is an infection of the sinus cavities that is caused by bacteria and is usually preceded by a cold, allergy attack, or irritation by environmental pollutants. Unlike a cold, however, bacterial sinusitis requires a diagnosis from Dr. Christopher Shaari, Hackensack ear, nose and throat doctor, and treatment with an antibiotic to cure the infection and prevent future complications.

Mucus normally collects in the sinuses and drains into the nasal passages, but when a person has a cold or an allergy attack their sinuses become inflamed and are unable to drain. Without drainage, this can lead to congestion and infection. Dr. Shaari, Hackensack, NJ ENT, will diagnose acute sinusitis if a patient has up to 4 weeks of purulent nasal drainage accompanied by nasal obstruction, facial pain-pressure-fullness, or both. The sinus infection is likely bacterial if it persists for 10 days or longer, or if the symptoms worsen after an initial improvement.

Acute sinusitis becomes chronic when a patient has frequent sinusitis, or the infection lasts more than three months. Symptoms of chronic sinusitis may be less severe than those of acute, but untreated chronic sinusitis can cause damage to the sinuses and cheekbones that sometimes can require surgery to repair. Antibiotic therapy for bacterial sinusitis may be an appropriate treatment for sinusitis. If Dr. Shaari, Hackensack sinus doctor, thinks that a patient has chronic sinusitis, intensive antibiotic therapy may be prescribed and sometimes surgery may be necessary to remove physical obstructions that may contribute to sinusitis.

By understanding chronic sinusitis, Dr. Shaari, ENT Hackensack, NJ, hopes his patients will better understand the need for expert care from his office.
