Here, managing Director of Yorkston Oakmont Antoine Bell offers some advice for budding business owners and shares what it was that inspired him to branch out on his own.
What encouraged you to start the business? How did you know the time was right?
I was fortunate enough to surround myself with successful entrepreneurs who mentored me and are still doing so. If you wait for the time to be right, it will never be. You make it the right time. My personal philosophy is "We don't make excuses, we make it happen."
What was your aim for the business when you first established, do you feel like you've accomplished your aim?
My Goal was to pass on the lessons I have learned from my coaches to the people I would have the opportunity to work with. With 9 branches opened in the last 3 years - 2 in Australia - I think I am on the right path.
Why did you choose Houston as the base for the business, what is the start-up community in Houston like?
The state of Texas is filled with great, hardworking people with great family and team values. Our business model rewards performance for advancement regardless of your background. Houston is the 4th largest city in the U.S and has great diversity, which made it the most attractive destination.
What do you feel makes the business different to the competition?
Our people, our perspective and our passion.
Have you any expansion plans or aspirations for the business that you would like to share?
Our Clients want us in 15 markets in the next 30 months.
What advice would you give to people considering setting up their own business? Is there anything you would do differently a second time around?
If I had to start over I would attack it differently, Initially, I was just looking to "cram for the exam," to pass the test and move on to the next course. Eventually I learned that to be great coaches, we must seek mastery. Leaders lead from the front.
