/24-7PressRelease/ - EVERTHORPE, UK, November 11, 2007 - E.ON UK, one of the country's leading green generators, has announced that it has started generating electricity for the first time at the UK's largest dedicated biomass power station at Steven's Croft in Lockerbie.
The company is currently in the final phase of testing before the 90m 44MW plant enters commercial operation in December.
Andy Carling, Steven's Croft project manager for E.ON, said: "We started generating electricity from the plant at just after six o'clock yesterday evening - less than two years after we first broke ground on the site.
"We've already tested the boiler and various other components, but yesterday was the first time we've run everything together as we would during full commercial operation.
"As part of the testing phase we've got to make sure that every part of the plant is working correctly before we bring it online and we're delighted with the results so far."
Once complete, the scheme will generate enough electricity for around 70,000 homes and also prevent the emission of 140,000 tonnes of greenhouse gases every year.
"Steven's Croft is a groundbreaking project that has been built on time and on budget," said Andy.
"In addition to helping the Government meet its challenging renewable energy targets, it will benefit the local economy by using by-products from the local timber industry, as well as offering local farmers a new market in renewable fuel crops."
