    SCOTTSDALE, AZ, October 28, 2013 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Eric Maass, Engineering Director for Medtronic, Inc., has been named a Worldwide Branding Professional of the Year in Biomedical Engineering. While inclusion in Worldwide Branding is an honor, only a small selection of members in each discipline are chosen for this distinction. These special honorees are distinguished based on their professional accomplishments, academic achievements, leadership abilities, years of service, and the credentials they have provided in association with their Worldwide Branding membership.

Dr. Maass has 35 years of professional experience, with four years at Medtronic, Inc. Over the years, he has established himself as one of the originators of Six Sigma and has continued to grow as an expert in Six Sigma methodology, product and technology development, and predictive engineering. In the course of his duties, he is responsible for coaching other professionals, as well as overseeing projects and product development, developing and teaching courses, and performing advanced risk management consultations. Looking back, Dr. Maass attributes his success to his ability to communicate complex concepts clearly across various engineering disciplines, and to generate and sustain focused enthusiasm with individuals and teams. He became involved in his profession because his biomedical engineering background provided a unique perspective on the melding of engineering with statistical and probabilistic methods when he joined Motorola. Very successful applications impressed and captured the interest of upper management at Motorola, leading to his involvement in the origination of Six Sigma and to the application of predictive engineering to product and technology development. The highlights of his career were leading new product development efforts that resulted in high-tech products featured on the front covers of major electronics magazines and in hundreds of millions of dollars in profits. Bringing these methods to Medtronic enabled the company to create new products with higher value in medical situations with significantly lower risk.

Dr. Maass received a Ph.D. in industrial and systems engineering from Arizona State University in 2008, a Master of Engineering in Chemical and Biomedical Engineering from Arizona State University in 1982, and a Bachelor of Arts in biological sciences from UMBC in 1975. In addition to his degrees, he is a certified Master Black Belt in both Lean Six Sigma and Design for Six Sigma, and he is a senior member of IEEE. In recognition of his dedication and reputation for high-quality work, he received the Star of Excellence from Medtronic in 2012, and he was named as Senior Engineer of the Year by IEEE in 1999. In years to come, Dr. Maass intends to help Medtronic eradicate field actions and post-launch issues for medical products.
