NEW YORK, NY, November 25, 2009 /24-7PressRelease/ --Erin R. Kenny, Gender-Based Violence Specialist in the Humanitarian Response Branch of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), has been recognized by Cambridge Who's Who for demonstrating dedication, leadership and excellence in humanitarian aid.
With 12 years of experience in social work and humanitarian aid, Ms. Kenny is a respected authority in the field of gender-based violence (GBV) in emergency and recovery settings. She assumed her current position at the UNFPA in January, 2007. She is tasked primarily with providing strategic and technical direction to the Fund, supporting country offices to strengthen their GBV prevention and response capacities and to coordinate systems of response, and representing the Fund on all matters related to GBV in humanitarian settings.
Prior to joining the UNFPA, Ms. Kenny lent her talents to several international non-governmental organizations including the International Rescue Committee and Child Fund International, where she helped design and implement GBV programs in such conflict and post-conflict settings as Northern Uganda, Sierra Leone and Liberia. Involved in social work from her teen years, she discovered her calling as an English teacher and journalist in the Balkans in the mid-90s. As a graduate student at Columbia University, Ms. Kenny worked with Dr. Ronald Waldman, a champion of child health in developing countries. She attributes her success to her passion for human rights, gender equality and knack for being in the right place at the right time.
Ms. Kenny received her Master's Degree in Public Health with a Concentration in Forced Mitigation and Health in 2001 from Columbia University and her Bachelor's Degree in English Literature and Journalism in 1996 from the University of Richmond. She finds deep personal fulfillment in humanitarian work and looks forward to more years in the same capacity.
