/24-7PressRelease/ -- At its annual scholarship luncheon, the Essex Rotary Club presented scholarships to six students from Essex High School, the Center for Technology-Essex, and Mount Mansfield Union High School received the Rotary scholarships. Also, one area student was selected to receive the Carolyn Barra Scholarship.
The Essex Rotary scholarships are awarded to a student who puts "service above self," and goes the extra mile, willing to take on tasks without consideration of personal recognition or gain, who is average or above in class standing, but may not be receiving financial scholarships from other sources, and who participated willingly in school activities, but not necessarily as a leader.
This years recipients are: Lori Tantlinger and David Combs from Essex High School; Jeremy Audet and Ruby Verge from the Center for Technology-Essex; and Taylor Yeates and John Paul (JP) Dubuque from Mount Mansfield Union High School.
The Carolyn Barra Scholarship is given out annually in honor of Carolyn Barra, an Essex High School student who died unexpectedly of Pulmonary Hypertension Disorder in 2002. After being diagnosed with Pulmonary Hypertension Disorder in 2001, she endured difficult experimental treatment for the disease, which has no cure and no known cause. Throughout it all, including frequent trips to New York City for medical care, Carolyn continued to shine academically, participate in school theater, and volunteer at Rotary and other community functions. In addition to the scholarship, a donation of $500, in the recipient's name, is made to the Pulmonary Hypertension Center at the Children's Hospital of New York as a means of increasing awareness and helping to find a cure for the disease.
The annual recipient is chosen based on academic achievement (being in the top 15% of their class), participation in the performing arts, and being active in community service.
The 2009 recipient of the Carolyn Barra Scholarship is Essex High School student, Rebecca Driscoll.
