/24-7PressRelease/ - WALNUT CREEK, CA, September 17, 2008 - One of the biggest objections to having procedures such as skin resurfacing or liposuction performed is the recovery time before the patient can get - and feel - back to normal. But renowned cosmetic surgeon Dr. William Jervis now offers his patients significantly shorter turn-around times following these procedures.
Imagine your skin actually vaporized by a Carbon Dioxide (CO2) laser. And after the vaporization is complete, your skin oozes and weeps making the patient uncomfortable and the wound open to infection. With the relatively new procedure of "Portrait Plasma," Dr. William Jervis allows patients to forego most of the oozing, weeping and missed time from work.
CO2 Laser resurfacing has been commonly used by people who have significant wrinkles or acne scars on their face to improve the lines - causing the "shadow" to diminish - making the wrinkles less noticeable.
However, the recovery took a long time, and often, the patients wondered if the changed look was worth the pain they felt. In addition to having to remain in their homes for several weeks, their skin was vulnerable to infection since it was basically an open wound.
But now there is a new, less invasive, less painful procedure called Portrait Plasma.
Portrait Plasma is "non-ablative" resurfacing in that it bakes the outer dead layers of skin into a "dressing" that peels off over a seven - 10 day period, leaving fresh skin which may then have makeup applied to hide the pink color.
"Overall, there is a much less intense healing period with the Portrait than with the CO2 laser, fewer complications and less color loss," said Dr. Jervis. "Only the abnormal coloration caused by sun damage."
"Portrait offers a lot of progressive skin contraction and regeneration over several months," Jervis said. "This provides not only getting a lot of skin tightening - though not usually not as much as with a facelift - but also a lot of wrinkle and blemish improvement, which CO2 laser does also but with more healing issues and side effects.
"Liposelection" by Vaser is the name of the newest ultrasonic system for fat reduction. It releases the fat into the injected fluid by breaking down the cell walls with a sound wave. The fluid - and the fat - is then suctioned off.
Liposelection offers less bleeding, less trauma, faster recovery and better skin retraction, especially when done superficially with small probes after the deeper fat is treated with larger ultrasonic probes, and overall smoother skin than with traditional liposuction.
