PORT VILA, VANUATU, November 08, 2008
/24-7PressRelease/ -- Seachange Lodge, in the tropical islands of Vanuatu, just two and a half hours flight time from Brisbane, is awash with orchids at the moment. As you first enter the gates you are fronted with the sight of exotic mauve orchids towering over three metres in height.
The sight of delicate mauve orchids growing over three metres in height greet you as you enter the gates. Following the path along past the Garden Cottage you notice deep purple ground orchids along the edge the walkway. Continuing down towards the swimming pool and you are once more confronted with a mass of two to three metre high miniature, brilliantly coloured orange orchids. As you pass through a deep green tropical garden you have to keep your eyes peeled. High over your head hange more sprays of delicate mauve and white orchids.
"We just happen to be lucky enough to live on a tropical island in the South Pacific", says the owners Rick and Wendy, when asked what their secret is. They purchased the property in 2002, when it was a run-down private home. Today it is a thriving boutique holiday accommodation.
"When we took over, there were no gardens at all", explains Wendy. "But the original owner must have been a keen gardener, judging by all the wonderful fruit trees all over the property and the well placed retaining walls. It has taken four years to see the gardens come to maturity".
You are greeted at every turn by exotic tropical plants, from high on the road side all the way down to the water's edge of Erakor Lagoon. All the six self-contained units are screened by natural greenery giving the guests their own privacy. Guests can laze in the swimming pool and enjoy the panoramic views of the lagoon.
"Wendy used to trawl the markets every Saturday looking for plants. I would have trouble finding her in the car when she finally came home", Rick laughed. "She would then spend the rest of the day planting. I have seen her shift a plant up to five times before it found a home that was suitable. Now the head gardener takes over the maintenance of the gardens and does a really great job".
Even if you are unable to stay at Seachange Lodge, as there are only six self-contained units, it is well worth a visit, just to stroll among the gardens.
