Facelift Recovery Time

The amount of time you take to recover from your facelift will depend on factors including your body's natural ability to heal, and the type of facelift you choose to have.

HOUSTON, TX, April 16, 2012 /24-7PressRelease/ -- The amount of time you take to recover from your facelift will depend on factors including your body's natural ability to heal, and the type of facelift you choose to have. Recovery time from a mini-facelift will take less time, but cannot provide the same results as a full facelift. Your board-certified plastic surgeon will best be able to help you determine what procedure will provide you with the look you desire.

What to Expect After a Facelift

During facelift surgery, incisions are made to enable your plastic surgeon to separate your skin from underlying tissue. Through these incisions, fat and excess skin is removed, and muscles are tightened and firmed. Once the underlying tissue has been adequately sculpted, your remaining skin is tightened over the muscles and the incisions are sutured. This is a major surgical procedure, and will require proper care and attention postoperatively to ensure positive results.

Swelling, numbness, pain, and skin discoloration are common for up to two weeks following a facelift. During this time, you will want to make sure you keep your incisions clean. Your plastic surgeon can provide you with medication to deal with any discomfort, and ice packs can be used to keep swelling to a minimum. During this time, it is essential that you give your body time to rest. Refraining from work and physically demanding activities will assist in your healing process.

Work and exercise can generally be resumed after ten to 14 days. You may be able to resume mild exercise such as stretching or walking after the first few days. Your plastic surgeon will discuss this with you in detail during your initial consultation. By comparison, a mini-facelift, endoscopic facelift, or thread facelift will require only one to four days before work and other activities can be resumed.

Other things your doctor will discuss with you will be when you can wear earrings, apply makeup, blow dry your hair, enter a sauna, and consume alcohol. All of these things will need to be avoided for a period after your facelift. Carefully following all of your plastic surgeon's post-surgery advice will help speed the recovery process, and ensure pleasing results from your procedure.
