FLINTSHIRE, UK, February 05, 2009
/24-7PressRelease/ -- Sex has scored a big fat zero as a way of achieving happiness. Romping between the sheets fails to do the trick when it comes to finding long-term contentment, according to online research by top-selling women's magazine Candis.
It achieved less than one per cent of the total score when people were asked what makes them happiest. In three regions - London, Yorkshire and Scotland - the nookie option didn't muster a single vote.
Half of the Brits questioned in the Candis UK Happiness Survey 2009 would rather spend time with their families than canoodling under the duvet.
Family-time was way ahead in all regions, with 47 per cent citing family and 15 per cent their children, putting other options including money, shopping, food, alcohol and sports firmly in the shade.
Love was also high on the priority list for the 2,202 respondents across 12 UK regions, making a clear distinction between it and casual sex.
Good health, security and friends also scored well as contributors to happiness, but a fifth said financial issues put them in a bad mood.
Nearly half - 48 per cent - said the happiest day of their lives was when their own child was born. And in a signal that marriage is still important, 19 per cent said their wedding day was their happiest ever.
An average nine per cent of respondents believed their happiest day 'hasn't happened yet', rising to 11 per cent in Yorkshire and 28 per cent in London.
The results re-confirm the findings of a 2006 happiness survey conducted by Candis - the sixth best-selling UK women's monthly. Family also came out of that as the most important factor determining people's level of happiness.
Editor Debbie Attewell, said: "It's very reassuring that despite living in such a promiscuous and materialistic age, sex without love is just not the answer to true happiness. Our survey shows that families are at the heart of real contentment for people the length and breadth of Britain today.
"Anything that gets in the way of family life like redundancy, ill health and cutting costs all were marked as having a negative impact on happiness, while family events, fun days out and the annual family holiday were seen as the top markers for happiness.
"Without exception, being surrounded by people who love and care for you was the choice over casual short term relationships every time."
Candis has a strong charity ethos, with ten per cent of subscription income donated to charity.
Since its launch 46 years ago it has given 52m to health charities and community initiatives across the UK. Latest beneficiaries have included Marie Curie Cancer Care, BLISS - the special care baby charity, Tommy's and Children's Hospices UK.
