BOCA RATON, FL, May 24, 2009 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Have you been slacking off in the workplace?

I¡¦m not talking about your work performance, but rather how you have been dressing.

I¡¦ve recently observed more ¡§don¡¦ts¡¨ than ¡§do¡¦s.¡¨ Some women have become downright lazy when it comes to what they wear to the office. (And, equally important is how you dress on the road, if you spend your time visiting customers or clients ¡V or prospective ones.)

In the current economic climate, some people consider being employed more than a necessity. It has become a luxury for many. So, it should be back to basics. It¡¦s time to become serious again about how to dress on work days.

Even when the economy starts to boom again, these tips could help you move more quickly up the ladder:

„X Well-dressed employees convey knowledge and interest in getting ahead. Unkempt workers convey disinterest and marginal performance.

„X There¡¦s been a shift back to skirt and pant suits, which should be a staple in your work wardrobe (just as the little black dress is ¡§it¡¨ after hours). Classic and tailored styles are the best choices. They can be feminine or on the masculine side with shoulder pads. Yes, those power pads have made a comeback.

A well-made suit can be worn often and lasts years. And, if you need to transition from the boardroom to dinner, you can alter your accessories to dress it up.

There are interesting skirt shapes this season, so seek a suit with one of them (i.e., a tulip skirt).

„X Mix and match. If you can find a suit with both a skirt and pants, then you can comprise a number of different outfits by mixing one or the other with different blouses and accessories. If your suits are dark or neutral, don¡¦t be afraid to add some color (top, scarf) to express your personal style.

„X When shopping for work clothes, mix stores and labels in order to look fresh.

„X Looking polished and refined takes precedence over wearing the latest trends. My definition of ¡§working-girl or executive-woman chic¡¨ is to dress neatly and look smart. That means choosing fashions that are timeless.

„X Pay attention to fit. Is your outfit too tight, too skimpy, too big? If so, find a good seamstress.

„X Flirty dresses don¡¦t belong in the 9 to 5 routine, especially if you work in a conservative corporate environment. If you don¡¦t work for a large corporation, ¡§professional¡¨ is still always the way to go.

„X If you are large in size, select darker colors and avoid big, colorful patterns. Muted vertical stripes also work well.

„X Others respond to the colors you wear, and there are different colors for different situations.

If you are presenting a product or important concept, think dark blue or dark gray because these colors remove the focus from what you are wearing, allowing others to focus on what you are saying. Dark blue or dark gray suggests professionalism, efficiency and authority. Dark red is a great accent for either of these color choices.

When you need to exude power, don a black suit and white blouse and accessorize with a spot of red. In contrast, if you want to come across as friendlier, dark brown is a suitable alternative to any of the colors I¡¦ve mentioned.

If you want others to communicate freely with you so you can gather information, a ¡§toast¡¨ colored suit with a light blue blouse has been known to do the trick. You¡¦ll look professional and won¡¦t be in any imposing colors that might threaten other people.

„X While you may to be well endowed above the waist and proud of it, minimize cleavage. Others won¡¦t become distracted and are likely to take you more seriously. If your clothing is overly revealing, you may have trouble getting attention for your ideas.

„X If your employer allows you to dress down, use common sense and good taste. For example, jeans (ironed, without the holes and not faded, please!) work best when paired with a blouse and/or a tailored jacket (i.e., blazer). Save the flimsy tank top for the weekend. Though the dress code may be relaxed where you work, you still should be ready for an unexpected meeting or visit from a client.

„X Sales of pantyhose or stockings have decreased, but I recommend them because they complete an outfit and flatter your legs. Keep the color neutral or dark.

„X Wearing the right jewelry indicates that you know quality. One eye-catching, tasteful piece is better than wearing too much.

„X Put your best face forward; don¡¦t overly ¡§make up.¡¨ Also, be sure that your hair and nails are clean and well groomed.

„X Dressing well will likely boost your confidence. It will also speak volumes about the image and health of your company.

Our society is a success-driven one and you have to dress for success to achieve positive results. .Today, perhaps more than ever, you should wear what works in the workplace. If your career wardrobe isn¡¦t what it should be, make some changes. The investment will be worth it in the long run.
