Fear Not: The Church and the Syrian Refugees in Greece

A video challenging how Christians react to the refugee crisis

LESVOS, GREECE, March 10, 2016 /24-7PressRelease/ -- The situation in Greece has fueled an international conversation debating aid, national involvement, even humanity. The plight of the people crossing borders and oceans, landing on the beaches in Greece has evoked a spectrum of societal emotion spanning from compassion to hate. Misrepresentation in popular media outlets and the loud thoughts spoken by an influential few have shaped a culture of fear around this refugee crisis.

Volunteers from Adventures in Missions have been on the beaches and serving in camps since late 2015. Short term trips have been continually rotating through Lesvos. Their involvement has inspired a different message. These volunteers are speaking up to challenge the confusion and the complacency of Christians and the Church'.

The Church is no stranger to fear. We are all susceptible to its grip. The Church needs to see this issue not through lenses of denomination or theological segmentation. It's about a need and a call to love and serve. This is a pivotal moment for the Church to act and an opportunity for Christians around the world to step up to the challenge of facing fear with faith.

"Living for the Lord isn't safe. Living a life of love isn't safe... but it's right"

Adventures in Missions is an interdenominational missions organization that focuses on discipleship. We emphasize prayer and relationships in our work amongst the poor. Since we were established in 1989, we have taken over 100,000 people into the mission field, some for as short as a week and others for as long as a year or longer. In several places around the world we minister year-round to "the least of these". We seek to disciple as Jesus did; our vision is that God would use us to raise up a generation of radically committed disciples of Jesus Christ.

"It's easy to say, 'send help' but stay over there." This is a challenge to the Church to see how important we can be in bringing change in the face of fear.
