/24-7PressRelease/ - ALLAMUCHY, NJ, August 10, 2008 - Dr James R. Fedich of Village Family Chiropractic on Route 517 in Allamuchy recently attended a national convention in Pittsburgh, PA. Dr. Fedich was updated on the latest natural treatments for Fibromyalgia. Fibromyalgia is a debilitating syndrome characterized by widespread pain, fatigue and sleep disturbances.
Fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) affects 3-6 million individuals of whom 90% are women between ages of 40 and 60. It is the 3rd most prevalent rheumatologic disorder after osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. FMS is not a new syndrome as it was first described in 1816. In 1987, The American Medial Association recognized FMS as a true illness and a major cause of disability.
The diagnosis of FMS is given when no specific underlying cause can be found for the following set of signs and symptoms. A complaint of widespread muscle pain on both sides of the body, for longer than 3 months, midline body pain, and a physical examination that reveals 11 of 18 specific trigger points. Additional symptoms may include tension headache, stiffness, sleep disorders, fatigue, irritable bowel syndrome, and depression.
The cause of fibromyalgia is unknown, although many patients report some traumatic physical or emotional event prior to the onset of their pain. Proposed cause for fibromyalgia include lack of physical fitness, sleep deprivation, chronic muscle spasm, nervous system dysfunction, hormone imbalances, viral infections, aluminum toxicity, and nutrition deficiencies.
Conventional medical treatment involves prescription anti-depressants, corticosteroids, and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. Prolonged use of these medications should be avoided as they have potentially serious side effects and they can also be addictive
Several other alternative non-drug therapies have shown promise in the treatment of FMS. Patient education and counseling, moderate aerobic exercise, stretching, detoxification, use of nutrients, herbs, have all been shown to be beneficial in the treatment. A strong rehabilitative approach that utilizes chiropractic adjustments, coupled with massage, physical therapy, and nutrition might help patient return to their normal activities of daily living.
The best recipe for relief of fibromyalgia would appear to be a combination of patient education, rest, stress reduction, moderate aerobic activity, stretching, nutritional intervention, and chiropractic care.
