BROOLYN, NY, February 08, 2009
/24-7PressRelease/ -- On Sunday, February 22 2009, at 11AM, First Presbyterian Church of Brooklyn, located at 124 Henry Street in Brooklyn Heights, will hold its Fifteenth Annual Police Appreciation Day Service, designed to thank and recognize the officers of the 84th Precinct for serving and protecting the community in its jurisdiction.
The sanctuary of the church on Police Appreciation Day, with uniformed officers and their families filling the front pews reserved for them is an indelible vision, and a rare, perhaps unprecedented occurrence of police and the community worshipping together on a celebratory and mutually supportive occasion.
Parishioners and community residents, Dorothy Gill and Dottie Turmail, members of First Presbyterian Church for over two decades; have traditionally planned the annual service. "It is a heartwarming occasion to thank all the police in our precinct for the wonderful protection they have given over the years" Mrs. Gill said.
Speaking about the annual event, Captain Mark DiPaolo said "I'm flattered as the Commanding Officer of the 84Th Precinct, representing the men and women of this command." Captain DiPaolo went on to express his gratitude with unmistakable humility saying "I look forward to this special event, and to a continued growing and laudable relationship between the 84th Precinct and the community that we serve."
The congregation, under the leadership of The Rev. Dr. Cari Jackson, Senior Interim Pastor, is an internationally racially, culturally and theologically diverse community that conspicuously challenges popular opinion which states that "Sunday at 11AM is the most segregated hour in America." At First Presbyterian Church of Brooklyn, corporate leaders, blue-collar workers, entrepreneurs, gays, lesbians, African-Americans, Whites, Asians, Hispanics and many other ethnicities spanning the economic spectrum make up this very inclusive and welcoming "come-as-you-are" environment.
The similarly diverse 84th Precinct with many ethnic and economic strata living and working in close proximity covers Brooklyn Heights, Boerum Hill, Vinegar Hill and the Farragut Residences. This in addition to the Downtown Business District encompassing the Fulton Street Mall, Atlantic Avenue, Antique & Middle-Eastern strip, Court Street's Lawyers Row and Metro Tech. The seat of local government, the 84th Precinct also has in its confines, the Brooklyn Borough Hall, the Municipal Building, the Brooklyn House of Detention, NYC Fire Department Headquarters, Transit Authority Headquarters, Transit Museum and the NYPD "911" Building.
"We have done this annual Police Appreciation Service for more than a decade, because we recognize the tremendous watchful care given by officers of the 84th and other precincts to the citizens of New York" Rev. Cari Jackson said. She continued saying "we also recognize that expressions of appreciation affirm them to continue to be and give their best" concluding, "we invite our entire Brooklyn community and beyond to join us in this affirmation."
