Fluoridated Water Keeps Cavities At Bay

    LA GRANGE, IL, May 18, 2014 /24-7PressRelease/ -- In La Grange, dentistry patients have one thing in common-they are susceptible to cavities. This is a daily battle for everyone because acid and plaque bacteria make contact with the teeth after eating and drinking. The best preventative care is at-home oral hygiene-brushing, flossing and rinsing.

Fluoride can be found in mouthwash, toothpaste, and floss, even in the water you drink. Fluoridated water has helped many communities lower the risk of dental caries.

How do you know if your water is fluoridated? The National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion keeps a running list of counties and towns/cities with fluoridated water, and La Grange is categorized as having a water system that purchases water with adjusted fluoride concentration.

A normal concentration of fluoride is good for tooth enamel, and it is safe and effective for preventing dental decay.

"We want our patients to be aware of the importance fluoride plays in protecting teeth from cavities. A controlled supply of fluoridated water through a town system or bottle water is beneficial for all patients, no matter their ages. This is especially important for children because tooth decay is still the most common disease for their age group," explains Dr. Maragos.

It's important for children to get some exposure to fluoride, but Dr. Maragos and his dental team remind parents that too much fluoride while teeth are developing under the gums can cause fluorosis-a change in the appearance of tooth's enamel.

About Dr. James M. Maragos, D.D.S.:
In 1981, Dr. James M. Maragos received his Doctor of Dental Surgery (D.D.S.) degree from Loyola University School of Dentistry. For the next year, Dr. Maragos completed his general dentistry residency at Loyola Hospital. With this experience, he learned advanced techniques in treating medically compromised patients, and administered sedation medications to relax patients.
