DOYLESTOWN, PA October 16, 2008 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Focus Express Mail Pharmacy, one of the nation's leading Internet mail-order pharmacies specializing in diabetes medications, devices, and supplies, is pleased to invite public school districts in New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania to apply for participation in its national diabetes education program, Peds for Prevention . This fun and interactive program is designed to encourage healthy exercise and eating habits among elementary school children and their families. Applications for participation will be accepted through 5 p.m. EST on Nov. 17, 2008. The selected school district will receive grants totaling $5,000 as well as collateral materials including a customized interactive Web site, free pedometers for all elementary school students and weekly health education announcements and take-home tips. The collective value of the program is $30,000.

Focus Express Mail Pharmacy developed the successful Peds for Prevention program last year in response to the alarming rate at which young people are developing Type 2 diabetes. Previously seen primarily in adults over age 45, Type 2 diabetes is a potentially deadly disease that appears to be increasing with childhood obesity rates. The National Institutes of Health and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimate that 177,000 individuals under the age of 20 in the United States are suffering from diabetes. Peds for Prevention seeks to prevent this and other chronic illnesses by encouraging participants to engage in healthy eating and exercise habits, including using a pedometer to record every step taken during the month of April 2009. A post-program survey of the 2008 participating school district, Haverford Township School District in Pennsylvania, revealed that Peds for Prevention resulted in students spending less time indoors and more time walking with pedometers, riding bicycles and playing outside with friends. Participants and their families also reported increased knowledge regarding Type 2 diabetes - particularly its treatment and prevention - and healthier eating habits.

To qualify for the 2009 grant, an applicant must be a public school district in New Jersey, New York or Pennsylvania that is in need of a health education program as well as grant monies to sustain this program or purchase new exercise equipment. Previous Peds for Prevention grant recipients are not eligible to receive funding. Selection criteria include the degree to which the school district's demographics meets the needs of a health education program and grant initiatives; the district's ability to sustain the health education program; the district's ability to measure and assess outcomes; and documented school district/community relations programs. Within the recipient district, the top three schools reporting the most steps walked during the program period will be awarded $2,500, $1,500 and $1,000 (respectively) in Peds for Prevention grant monies.

For an application and additional information regarding restrictions, eligibility and selection criteria, please visit Focus Express Mail Pharmacy's Web site at http://www.FocusPharmacy.com and click on the Peds for Prevention icon in the lower right-hand corner prior to the application deadline of Nov. 17, 2008, at 5 p.m. EST.
