/24-7PressRelease/ - NEW YORK, NY - March 13, 2006 - PHOTOGRAPHIC GALLERY, in Manhattan's historic Seaport District, is proud to announce its upcoming show: The War in Iraq: Year 4 - Day 1.
Four unembedded photojournalists: Kael Alford, Ghaith Abdul-Ahad, Thorne Anderson and Rita Leistner covered the War in Iraq outside the protective umbrella of the US and Coalition Forces. Their subject: the Iraqi population that has borne the brunt of the invasion and occupation of American led coalition forces.
These photographs help to dispel that notorious fog of war, which has been manipulated to impugn reflection and malign dissent. We see Iraqis at work and at play, in despair and in grief, as victims and as "insurgents". We see the signs and symbols that have flooded the media, in context.
This is photojournalism that is insightful and courageous and accomplished. Each photograph is a work of art in its own right. The commitment of these photographers placed them in constant danger, and those of us who remain safely cloistered from the chaos, havoc and despair that are everyday life for Iraqis owe them an enormous debt of gratitude.
Our exhibit inaugurates a national and international touring exhibition that coincides with the publication of their book: Unembedded: Four Photojournalists on the War in Iraq, (Chelsea Green 2005).
PhotoGraphic Gallery is committed to exploring, promoting and reflecting the spirit and vitality of New York City; its artists; and the art it inspires. In this role we recognize a profound connection between the War in Iraq and the life, dreams, and fears of our city.
As New Yorkers deeply affected by the events and memory of 9/11, we invite you to discover for yourself the nature of the War in Iraq, so vividly recorded by four young photojournalists who truly honor their profession. In recognition of their brave work, and that of their colleagues, a portion of gallery sales will be donated to Reporters Without Borders (http://www.rsf.org). Lucie Morillon of Reporters Without Borders will be present at the March 14 Media Reception to share information about their mission and current projects.
During the course of this exhibition there will be screenings of "The War Tapes" directed by Deborah Scranton. This film, along with "The Blood of My Brother" directed by Andrew Berends, will accompany the touring exhibition. Both films are being presented at this year's Tribeca Film Festival in New York City.
Information on screenings will be available via http://www.photographicnyc.com.
March 18 there will be continual screening of the War Tapes at Jeremy's Ale House 228 Front St.
