WASHINGTON, DC, March 22, 2010
/24-7PressRelease/ -- On Saturday, April 3, the Former U.S. Surgeon General Dr. David Satcher will review with Student National Medical Association (SNMA) members the status of "Healthy People 2010" - his plan to improve the overall health of Americans and reduce health disparities in minority communities. His review will take place during the Annual Medical Education Conference in the Sheraton Chicago Hotel & Suites, room Chicago VI, beginning at 2:30 pm CST.
During the plenary session, Dr. Satcher will assess the accomplishments of his plan, and setbacks to reaching the ultimate goal. He will be joined by panelist to discuss current initiatives stemming from Healthy People 2010, from an institutional, community-based and organized medicine perspective.
Among the panelists are Dr. Sonja Boone, Director of the American Medical Association's Physician Health and Health Care Disparities; Dr. Warria Esmond, Medical Director of Settlement Health in East Harlem, NY; and Dr. Rubens Pamies, Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs and Dean for Graduate Studies at the University of Nebraska Medical Center.
Adapted from Dr. Satcher's "Healthy People 2010" plan, the conference theme, "Healthy Impact 2010: Educate. Advocate. Empower," will focus on providing members with the tools to bring about a healthier and more equitable health care system. Workshops and presentations will cover academic preparedness, in depth discussion on health care equality, and developing strategies to make an impact among other social/political topics.
