FORT MYERS, FL, January 23, 2010 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Fort Myers multisport coach and certified trainer, Angie Ferguson makes charitable donation on behalf of "Geared Up! Ferguson, a multisport coach who leads the Geared Up! Triathlon Team, says, "Although this is the first time I've ever donated to the Blessings in a Backpack program, I'm extremely proud to do so. It was created to help those children improve their health and thus, perform better in school.

According to a study done at Boca Raton Elementary School in Florida, scores for the Scholastic Reading Inventory (SRI)--a reading comprehension test for students participating in the Blessings in a Backpack--increased 80 percent overall. The study also reports increases in reading by 31 percent and in math by 29 percent among third, fourth and fifth graders.

Ferguson stated, "I believe in giving back to the community. This is an investment in our future and it's the right thing to do. Giving back is what it means to be a part of a community--and I love this community!"

*About the Blessings in a Backpack Program:*
For some children, where school is five days a week, for others, hunger is seven days a week, 365 days a year. The Blessings in a Backpack program is a results-oriented program designed to feed elementary school children whose families qualify for the Federal free and reduced meal program--families who may not have enough food to make it through the weekend. The Blessings in a Backpack program not only feeds these children, but also aims to increase test scores and school attendance, improve reading skills, positive behavior and most especially, their health.

A donations of $80 feeds a child for an entire school year. With that donation, a school is chosen and a local grocer partners with the Blessings in a Backpack program to provide food for meals in backpacks. Every Friday, students receive their backpacks with staples that require little to no preparation. They then return to school on Monday with their backpacks, ready to learn.

Blessings in a Backpack (BIB) is a 501 C (3) non-profit organization currently feeding over 18,500 children in 16 states. The program is a hybrid of private sector funding and public partnership carried out in public schools. We are feeding the future of America, one school at a time.
