Some studies indicate that in the United States, women are choosing silicone implants over saline by a factor of 2 to 1. Dr. Cohen has seen even higher numbers at his practice. "The new, cohesive silicone gel filled implants have many advantages," says Dr. Cohen. "The latest generation of silicone implants has an improved safety profile, with the silicone largely remaining within the implant shell in the event of rupture. These cohesive silicone gel filled implants are also more durable than earlier models."
Though durable, this implant type still offers a natural feel that resembles a woman's own breast tissue. The shift in preference to silicone implants has been quick and there is little reason to expect any shift away from them in the coming years. In fact, many patients with older saline implants are now coming in to exchange their implants for newer silicone models.
