Francis Alfred Bates Posthumously Honored for Excellence in Legal Education

    HAMILTON, AUSTRALIA, September 17, 2016 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Francis Alfred Bates has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process. He resided with his wife, Mary, to whom he has been married since 1975, until his passing on September 12, 2016.

Born in Newcastle upon Tyne in England, Mr. Bates was a respected educator who passed on his legal expertise to countless law students over the course of his career. He received an LLB and LLM from the University of Sheffield in 1966 and 1969 respectively. He was Captain of Sheffield University's University Challenge in 1966 and winner of the Newcastle Journal Plate for Intervarsity Debating in 1967. He was also a Senior Fulbright Scholar and Visiting Professor of Law at Lewis and Clark College and Northwestern School of Law in 1986.

Mr. Bates began his professional life as a lecturer in law at St. Albans College. He then lectured at Dundee College in Scotland until 1969. Next, he traveled to Hobart, Australia, to lecture at the University of Tasmania for 17 years. He then spent a year as the school's Dean of Law. Mr. Bates next held the position of Vice President (1986 to 1987) and Chair (1994 to 1999) of the Australian College of Education's Hunter Branch. Concurrently, beginning in 1987, he served as a law professor at the University of Newcastle, until his retirement in 2010. Classes he taught include General Principles of Law, Mercantile Law, Introduction to Scots Law, Public Law, Contract, Commercial Arbitration, Criminal Law, Torts, Law as a Liberal Study, Family Law, Financial Aspects of Family Law, Comparative Law and Law and Literature.

Mr. Bates also acted as an external examiner for various LL.M. and M.Leg. St. S.J.D. and Ph.D. theses for Monash University, the University of Tasmania and the University of Technology, Sydney. He has written books, dozens of chapters in books, articles, reports & notes and bound teaching materials. Mr. Bates also presented projects, received grants and published three research monographs. Additionally, his reviews of books were published in The Law Teacher, University of Tasmania Law Review, Australian Law Journal, Criminal Law Journal, International Journal of Law and the Family, Australian Library Journal, Asia Pacific Law Review, Newcastle Law Review, and University of New South Wales Law Journal.

Other activities connected to law and legal education that Mr. Bates participated in included supervising postgraduate students, and attending seminars and lectures as an invited guest at Brunel University, Monash University, St. Louis University, University of Windsor, Free University of Berlin, University of Otago, University of Newcastle, University of Idaho, University of Newcastle Upon Tyne, University of Tasmania, and City University of Hong Kong, among many others. He was a member of the Order of Australia, International Society of Family Law, Australasian Law Teachers Association, Society of Legal Scholars, Association of Law Teachers, Lawasia, Tasmanian Family Law Practitioners' Association, Children's Bureau of Australia, Law and Literature Association of Australia, the Family Law Section of the Law Council of Australia, Newcastle Business Club, Hunter Valley Family Law Practitioners' Association, Australia and New Zealand Law and History Society, Newcastle and District Law Society, Dylan Thomas Society of Australia, and Australian American Education (Fulbright) Association (Life Member). He also served as a consultant to La Trobe University on the establishment of a professional Law Faculty.

His many achievements were taken into consideration when he was chosen to be featured in the 27th through 32nd editions of Who's Who in the World. Mr. Bates was also included in Who's Who in Australia (from 1988), Australian Debrett (from 1988), Who's Who of Australian Writers (from 1991), International Dictionary of Biography (from 1993), International Who's Who of Writers and Authors (from 1996), Cambridge Blue Book (from 2007), and Madison Who's Who (from 2008).
