Frank W. Hayes, MD, Honored for Invaluable Contributions to Military Psychiatry

Frank W. Hayes, MD, named Professional of the Year by Cambridge Who's Who Publishing



    COCOA BEACH, FL, August 11, 2010 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Frank W. Hayes, MD, Professor Emeritus of Psychiatry retired from the University of California, Los Angeles, has been recognized by Cambridge Who's Who for demonstrating dedication, leadership and excellence in military psychiatry.

The son of a doctor, Frank W. Hayes, MD, recalled his early exposure to the medical field during an interview with Cambridge Publishing. Not only was his father a physician, but his grandfather also boasted an impressive resume, having spent his working years as a mortician. Ultimately, familial influence inspired both Dr. Hayes and his brother to pursue careers in the healthcare field. Following the receipt of his medical degree, Dr. Hayes dedicated the next 53 years of his career to general medicine including adult psychiatry, military psychiatry and aviation medicine. He worked closely with the military to treat servicemen and their families and served the psychiatric needs of local mental health facilities and prisons. In addition, he served as a Military Consultant for the Air Force Surgeon General in the areas of Psychiatry and Neurology. Later, Dr. Hayes joined the faculty at the University of California, Los Angeles after becoming the first Professor and Chairman of the Department of Psychiatry at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences. He held positions with the United States Department of Defense and was Professor and Chairman of the Department of Psychiatry at the Drew Medical School and the Martin Luther King Medical Center in Los Angeles.

Dr. Hayes has accumulated an extensive collection of awards and distinctions over the years. He received the Legion of Merit from the United States Air Force and the Meritorious Service Medal. He was presented with Air Force Commendation Medals and was honored with a Special Recognition Award from the Harbor-UCLA Psychiatry Residency Training Program. In addition, he was the recipient of a plaque award in appreciation of leadership and dedicated services to the Southeast Mental Health Region of the Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health as well as plaque awards from the Lower Magnolia Team at Choate Mental Health & Development Center and the Southern Illinois Regional Social Services Mental Health Nursing Section. More recently, Dr. Hayes was named among America's Top Psychiatrists in 2007 and 2010, and was selected as Cambridge Publishing's Professional of the Year representing military psychiatry for the 2010/2011 year.

Dr. Hayes earned his MD from Indiana University School of Medicine and completed his residency at Letterman Army Medical Center. He graduated with high honors from the Indiana School of Arts and Science with a bachelor's degree in anatomy and physiology, and completed medically-related coursework at the United States Air Force School of Aerospace Medicine. Dr. Hayes is a fellow of the American College of Forensic Examiners, a distinguished life fellow of the American Psychiatric Association and a diplomate of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology as well as the American College of Forensic Examiners. His additional affiliations include the Black Psychiatrists of America, Phi Eta Sigma, Alpha Omega Alpha and Phi Beta Kappa. Aside from his medical endeavors, Dr. Hayes is an ordained minister at the Olivet Free Will Baptist Church, in Carbondale Ill. He is married to Margaret L.J. Hayes, MD, who is a certified psychiatrist in active practice as well as an ordained minister.
