For more than 30 years, Dr. Sim has served as a professor of Orthopedic Surgery at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. Since 2000, he has also served the Mayo Clinic as chair of the division of Orthopedic Oncology. Dr. Sim received his doctorate degree from Dalhousie University Medical School in 1964; he graduated as a member of the science research honors society, Sigma Zi. He was certified to practice as an orthopedic surgeon in Minnesota in 1972.
Dr. Sim is an honorary fellow of the Royal Australian College of Surgeons. He is also a member of multiple organizations, including SICOT, the American Medical Association, the Orthopedic Society, the Orthopedic Research Society, and the Musculoskeletal Tumor Society. Furthermore, Dr. Sim is affiliated with such establishments as the Minnesota Orthopedic Society, the Mid-America Orthopedic Association, the International Society of Limb Salvage, the International Society of Intraoperative Radiation Therapy, and the International Skeletal Society.
In order to remain active and engaged in his field, Dr. Sim serves as a member of the International Orthopedic Association, the American Orthopedic Association, the American Orthopedic Society of Sports Medicine, the American College of Sports Medicine, the Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, and the 20th Century Orthopedic Society. He is also an honorary member of the Ruth Jackson Orthopedic Society and has served on the board of directors of the Canadian Orthopedic Foundation.
Dr. Sim has served his community as a physician for the U.S. National Junior Hockey Team. He also served as a Second Lieutenant of the Black Watch Regiment in Germany in 1961. He has two children: Leslie and Sheridan.
Dr. Sim has received multiple awards and commendations for his service in his field. He was a recipient of the Distinguished Award by the Mayo Clinic in 2003 and the Outstanding Service Award by the Canadian Orthopedic Association in 2000, as well as a Lifetime Achievement Award by the American Orthopedic Association in 2009. He was also commended with the Diversity Award in 2012. Dr. Sim was featured in Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, and Who's Who in the World.
