PHOENIX, AZ, June 10, 2009 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Dangerous Living: Coming Out in the Developing World, a documentary that explores the lives of gay and lesbian people in non-western cultures and their struggle for basic human rights in the face of severe oppression, will be shown from 12 noon to 2:30 p.m., Saturday, June 27 at the SGI Phoenix Culture Center, 1930 E. Myrtle St. in Phoenix.
A panel discussion will follow the showing of the one-hour film. Panelists will share their experience and knowledge of what it means to live in a culture of daily oppression because of their sexual orientation of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or questioning (LGBTQ).
"In the United States we are focused on gay marriage rights, but in countries such as Egypt, Honduras, Kenya and Thailand, the LGBTQ community faces severe oppression such as imprisonment or even execution," said Beth Tucker, coordinator of the event. "As we strive for our own rights, it's vital to educate ourselves on the struggles our brothers and sisters in other countries. This documentary will be an eye-opener, and hopefully a call to action to raise awareness of this horrendous discrimination and cruelty."
Dangerous Living is part of the Human Rights Watch Selects series. Admission to the event is free, but seating is limited. To register, call 602-547-8470. For more information about the film go to http://www.afterstonewall.com. For more information on SGI-USA, visit http://www.sgi-usa.org.
