He has served as the director for the Global China Center for more than 10 years, where he draws upon his extensive knowledge of Chinese and Western Christianity to foster a clearer, stronger sense among the Chinese people about their rich Christian heritage. He also raises awareness among Chinese intellectuals of the positive contribution of Christianity. As Director of China Institute since 1989, he has sought to help Chinese Christians grow in their understanding of the Bible and its application to daily life.

. He has served as a teacher in several institutions, including China Evangelical Seminary, Taipei, where he taught Greek and New Testament, and Shanghai University. He has also delivered lectures and papers at a number of national and international venues, including the Yale University Divinity School, Oxford University, the British Library, Peking University, Renmin University of China (People's University), Shanghai University, and Tunghai University.
Prior to pursuing a career as a missionary, Dr. Doyle intended to teach in a seminary in the United States. Upon completing a Bachelor of Arts, with honors, at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill in 1966, he attended graduate school, completing a Master of Divinity, with honors, through the Virginia Theological Seminary in 1969 and a PhD in Classics through the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1975. Just before receiving his PhD, he sensed God leading him to become a foreign missionary. He and his wife joined the Overseas Missionary Fellowship, which focuses on East Asia, and were sent to Taiwan, where they studied Chinese; they lived in Taiwan for a total of ten years..
For more than 50 years, Dr. Doyle has directed his energies to studying the Bible, especially the New Testament; theology; the history of Christianity in the West and in China; and Chinese history, culture and society. He tries to show the ways in which biblical Christianity applies to all of society.
