/24-7PressRelease/ -- Gafcon Inc., a leading California-based construction management and consulting firm, has been awarded a contract to provide pre-construction and construction management services for a student housing complex on the campus of the University of California, Los Angeles.
Located on the northwest zone of the campus at De Neve Drive and Charles E. Young Drive, the infill student housing project is being developed by UCLA Capital Programs for UCLA Housing & Hospitality Services and includes 1,525 beds, a 750-seat dining room and support space in four new mid-rise buildings on 8.1 acres. The existing Office of Residential Life building will be demolished to provide the building sites for two of the new structures. The other two will be constructed between existing buildings. The total size of the four new buildings is nearly 500,000 square feet.
Construction began in summer 2009. The last of the four new residence halls are anticipated to be completed and ready for occupancy by winter 2013.
Gafcon has managed more than $1 billion worth of educational facility construction, including school bond program management for the San Diego Community College District, Grossmont-Cuyamaca Community College District, Carlsbad Unified School District, Grossmont Union High School District, Sweetwater Union High School District, and Rancho Santa Fe School District. Project management projects have included San Diego State University, Beth Israel School and Sanctuary, The Accelerated School in Los Angeles and San Diego Jewish Academy.
The Gafcon project team includes Jared Meyer, construction manager; Shayna Gaffen, project coordinator; Ron Takaki, pre-construction manager; Iraj Aalam, project scheduler; James Weber, estimator; and Penny Kronberg, constructability review. Gafcon partnered with local builder, Benchmark Contractors, to augment the construction management team.
Other members of the construction team include Pfeiffer Partners Architects Inc., architect and space planner; Nabih Youssef & Associates, structural engineer; RBF Consulting, civil engineer; Kanwar & Associates, electrical engineer; IBE Consulting Engineers, mechanical engineer; SWA Group, landscape architect; and AEI-CASC, environmental engineer. The early site package is being executed by Bayley Construction. The contractors for the construction of the four new buildings have not yet been selected.
