NORTH POTOMAC, MD, February 14, 2014 /24-7PressRelease/ -- New parents are, obviously, new to parenthood. Before the due date, there are preparations to take care of. The baby needs a place to sleep, clothes to wear and other childcare necessities. It's an exciting time for new parents, but it also makes many expecting fathers and mothers nervous. Infant care is very important, especially while the child is still in the womb. Dr. Farnoush Jamali, Gaithersburg pediatrician, wants expecting parents to understand the importance of preventing prenatal infection.

What is prenatal infection? If you are planning a pregnancy or are pregnant, you need to take health precautions to ensure your baby develops healthily. There are three types of prenatal infections that the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) considers a risk to your baby-group B strep being the most common bacteria.

Group B Strep
According to the CDC, a quarter of all women carry bacteria that can cause group B strep infection. In regards to your health, group B strep won't harm you or other people that come in contact with you; however, your unborn child can be affected by this infection. During childbirth is when your baby has a higher risk of becoming infected with the group B strep bacteria.

If this happens, your child could become very ill. That's why you should test for group B strep when you are 35-37 weeks pregnant. Your primary physician will provide the best preventative measures to make sure the birth goes well.

Depend on your primary doctor to prescribe the best prenatal care. Your Gaithersburg pediatrician, Dr. Jamali, wishes you a happy and healthy pregnancy.

"Once your child is born, you need to find a primary pediatrician to partner with you as your child grows up. Because there will be colds and coughs, so it's important you have a children doctor in Gaithersburg. If you are interested in our practice, feel free to call and schedule a 'meet and greet' to get acquainted," says Dr. Jamali.
