SEATTLE, WA, February 11, 2010
/24-7PressRelease/ -- The owners of Garvey Schubert Barer have named Anne F. Preston chair of the firm. Elected to a three-year term, Preston succeeds John K. Hoerster, who has served in the role for more than 20 years, most recently since 2000, and returns to his active business transactional practice with the firm.
"It is a truly exciting time serve as a law firm leader since the entire legal industry is evolving," said Preston. "The current changes really play to Garvey Schubert Barer's long-time strengths, like partnering with clients on a more practical and value-oriented business and legal strategy and a move toward creative, alternative means of delivering legal services. At a time when all agree that quality must be combined with value, we expect to continue to put our clients' needs first and to innovate and deliver value in ways that will benefit our clients in the Pacific Northwest, Pacific Rim and beyond."
A long-standing member of the firm's executive committee, Preston also serves as managing director of Garvey Schubert's Seattle office, a post she's held since 2006. She previously chaired the firm's Labor and Employment Practice Group. Under Preston's leadership, in 2009, the Seattle office was selected by Seattle Business magazine as one of the "Best Companies to Work For." In addition, she championed the development and launch of two unique legal products in 2006, AdviceOnline and WinČ.
"A career-long Garvey Schubert Barer attorney, Anne has grown to be an extraordinary firm leader. She is relentless in her focus on finding creative and cost-effective ways to meet clients' needs and a pioneer in alternative service delivery models. Further, Anne's election is a testament to the firm's culture, which emphasizes the retention and leadership development of women and diverse attorneys," said Hoerster.
In her practice, Preston focuses on labor and employment matters, assisting clients in litigation, advising on myriad labor and employment issues in the business context, and providing training seminars. She has been named by her peers among the state's "Super Lawyers" in Washington Law & Politics magazine every year since 2000 and has been named one of the "Top 50 Women Washington Super Lawyers" every year since 2007. Preston was also included in the 2009 edition of The Best Lawyers in America in Labor and Employment Law.
A fellow with Litigation Counsel of America, Preston is also a member of the Washington State Bar Association's and King County Bar Association's Labor and Employment Sections. She serves on the Multiple Sclerosis Society Board of Trustees and is a past president of the Northwest Women's Law Center. Preston earned her J.D., Order of the Coif, from the University of California at Berkeley, Boalt Hall School of Law (1989) and her B.A, magna cum laude, from Amherst College (1984).
