WILLIAMSVILLE, NY, May 02, 2009 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Gaymar, the leading global provider of medical solutions for pressure ulcer and temperature management, today announced the company's sponsorship of the Sudden Cardiac Arrest Association (SCAA).

The SCAA promotes efforts to broaden public access to defibrillation and other initiatives for improving the survival rates of patients suffering from sudden cardiac arrest. Gaymar's sponsorship will support the association's campaign to eliminate preventable sudden cardiac arrest deaths by the year 2020.

"Sudden cardiac arrest strikes down more than 300,000 adults every year—one victim every two minutes—and we know that the vast majority of deaths from this affliction are preventable," said Chris Chiames, Executive Director of the SCAA. "Through their promotion of therapeutic cooling, Gaymar has supported our mission to prevent loss of life from cardiac arrest, and this sponsorship reflects our commitment to work even closer together and save more lives."

At medical facilities across the country, Gaymar has provided clinicians with the advanced technology and training needed to support therapeutic hypothermia treatment protocols, which are especially effective for victims of ventricular fibrillation and ventricular tachycardia, the most common forms of sudden cardiac arrest.

Patients who have experienced a cardiac arrest requiring resuscitation are at risk for significant neurologic impairment due to cerebral ischemia. More than 85% of patients successfully resuscitated in the field after cardiac arrest later perish from hypoxic-ischemic brain injury. Victims of ventricular fibrillation or ventricular tachycardia arrest who have been cooled are more likely to survive and have improved functional outcomes, since cooling the patient shortly after arrest for 12 to 24 hours and then rewarming at a controlled rate allows oxygen-deprived cells to recover safely from the shock of cardiac arrest.

"At Gaymar, we have been promoting the benefits of therapeutic cooling for the better part of a decade, and we have seen firsthand how proper education and training can save lives," said Dr. Thomas Stewart, President of Gaymar Industries. "We share a common goal with the SCAA, and we fully endorse their efforts to save the lives of sudden cardiac arrest victims and help them lead happier, healthier lives."

About the Sudden Cardiac Arrest Association
The Sudden Cardiac Arrest Association (SCAA) is an organization singularly focused on sudden cardiac arrest. It identifies and unites survivors, those at risk of sudden cardiac arrest, as well as others who are interested in being advocates on SCAA issues in their communities and beyond. The membership is dedicated to promoting solutions to prevent sudden cardiac death, including increased awareness, immediate bystander action, public access to defibrillation (PAD), and access to therapies such as cardiac cooling and implantable cardiac defibrillators. SCAA is a nonprofit, tax-exempt organization under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. More information about the association is available at http://www.suddencardiacarrest.org.
