Mr. Stern has been a distinguished lawyer in the Ohio area specializing in the fields of professional responsibility, ethics issues, legal malpractice, litigation management and appellate work. He is perhaps best known for over 194 appearances before the Ohio Supreme Court as Ohio Disciplinary Counsel and respondent's counsel, as well as a special investigator for the Commissioners Board of Character and Fitness of the Ohio Supreme Court. Mr. Stern currently serves as director of the firm Kegler, Brown, Hill & Ritter in Columbus, and was a senior editor of the Ohio State Law Journal.

A Columbus native, Mr. Stern was born in 1942 to Ohio Supreme Court Justice Leonard J. and Anastasia Stern. He attended Williams College for three years and graduated from the Ohio State University with a Bachelor of Arts, cum laude, in 1965. Mr. Stern went on to earn a JD, summa cum laude, from Ohio State and accepted a post as an associate of Alexander, Ebinger, Holschuh & Fisher. In 1972, he became a partner with Folkerth, Calhoun, Webster & O'Brien, and in 1980, he accepted a partnership with Arter & Hadden, all in the Columbus area. The Supreme Court of Ohio appointed him Disciplinary Counsel in 1993, where he served until he joined his current firm in 1997. Mr. Stern was named director of Kegler, Brown, Hill & Ritter in 2000.

Over a stellar legal career, Mr. Stern has been an unwavering pillar of ethics as counsel and lecturer on legal ethics and professional responsibility. He served notably as National Coordinating Counsel for asbestos litigation with Combustion Engineering Inc. and Basic Inc., and on the Special Commission to Review Ohio Ethics Rules. Mr. Stern delivered a keynote at the Faith and Law Symposium, and at the Special Commission on Legal Education symposium on Ethics and the Chinese legal system, where he spoke in Shanghai, China. He has made over 400 Continuing Legal Education presentations - to the Litigation Counsel of America, the ABA Commission on Legal Education, the Commission on Legal Education, and the Columbus and Ohio State Bar Associations, which honored him with the Liberty Bell Award for community and professional service. He is a volunteer with honors from the Ohio State Bar, and has served as a member of the State Bar Bell Commission on disciplinary rules.

In his civic duty, Mr. Stern has served as a member and President of the Bexley City Council in Ohio, the Bexley Civil Service Commission, the Ohio Citizens Committee for Arts, the National Defense Committee on Asbestos in Buildings Litigation, and the public member of the Ohio Optical Dispensers Board. He served as a trustee of Creative Living in Columbus, which helped provide housing and support to physically disabled individuals. Mr. Stern is also a member of the American Bar Foundation, the Litigation Counsel of America, the Columbus Bar Foundation, and the Ohio State Bar Foundation. He has served in leadership positions with the Ohio State Bar Association and belongs to the Order of Coif, Phi Beta Kappa, and Pi Sigma Alpha.

In addition to the Liberty Bell, Mr. Stern was honored with the American Jurisprudence Evidence Award from the Ohio State University College of Law and the 2015 Ohio Bar Weir Award for statewide distinction in ethics and professionalism. In 2012, he was named one of the Top Verdict Attorneys, and more recently, one of the Best Lawyers in America, one of the Ohio Superlawyers, and the Top Appellate Lawyer of the Year in Columbus. Mr. Stern is 2013's Top Professional Malpractice Lawyer of the Year in Columbus and the 2014, 2015, and 2017 Top Ethics Lawyer of the Year in Columbus. For a lifetime of dedication to legal ethics, Mr. Stern was selected for inclusion in numerous volumes of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Law, Who's Who in American Politics, Who's Who in the Midwest, and Who's Who in the World.
