Over the course of his long and fruitful legal career, Mr. Lewis acquired a reputation of excellence amongst his peers and communities. He began his journey as an attorney for General Atomic in 1961, but left in 1963 to become partner of Haskins, Lewis, Nugent & Newnham. After 14 years with the firm, Mr. Lewis advanced and became a judge, first for the Municipal Court in El Cajon, Calif., and then for the Superior Court in San Diego, Calif. He continued to demonstrate quality work and talent, which propelled him to subsequent positions as an associate justice for the California Court of Appeal in 1984 and of counsel to Lathan & Watkins in 1987. That year, Mr. Lewis also began working as an independent mediator and arbitrator, and although he retired from the law firm in 1997, he continued his private work until 2012.
With such a strong background, Mr. Lewis felt it was only natural for him to use his knowledge to help others in the community. He worked as an adjunct professor at Western State University School of Law from 1977 to 1985 and served on their executive board from 1977 to 1989, and was a contributing editor to "California Civil Jury Instructions," in 1984. Mr. Lewis was also on the board of directors of Cardium Therapeutics Inc. and Tennenbaum Opportunities Fund V., and was a trustee of the San Diego Museum of Art from 1986 to 1989, among other positions. Further, he was a lieutenant commander in the U.S. Naval Reserve from 1957 to 1961.
Mr. Lewis prepared for his career by earning a Bachelor of Arts, magna cum laude, from Tufts College in 1954 and a JD from Harvard University in 1957. Additionally, he gained admittance to the bar in Washington, DC, New Jersey, California, and the U.S. Supreme Court.
In recognition of his success, Mr. Lewis was honored with inclusion in numerous volumes of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Law, Who's Who in the West, and Who's Who in the World. He was also named Trial Judge of the Year by the San Diego Trial Lawyers Association in 1984, and was the recipient of the Heritage Award by the American Ireland Fund in 2004.
