Giovanni 'John' Desiderio Bucci celebrated for a career in fine arts that spans over four decades

CHICAGO, IL, July 02, 2010 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Distinguishable by his expressive and feisty personality as well as his passionate nature and zest for life, Giovanni 'John' Desiderio Bucci is unmistakably Italian and, yet, uncompromisingly American. He recently met with Cambridge Who's Who Publishing to talk about a career in electronics, art and design that has spanned over four decades. The visionary dynamo welcomed the Cambridge registry into his Chicago-based gallery, Bucci Studios International, where he enthusiastically offered an exclusive tour as well as detailed explanations of his unique creations.

Born in Gorizia, Italy, Bucci is an electrical engineer by trade but an artist by definition. "I started being creative and developing things immediately after the war as a kid," he stated. "I took correspondence in electronics so my time wasn't wasted. When I came here, [it] was a good source for my living and the beginning of my life in America." Bucci, who began his career with the Zenith Radio Corporation and Sun Electric Corp., quickly embarked on a career transition into designing and building custom cars. He parlayed his love of race cars into a fiberglass sports car that was displayed in the Transportation & Travel Pavilion at the 1964 New York World's Fair. Referred to as "Paul Anka's dream car," the piece remains one of his most famous works and stands as a focal point in his lofty studio.

Bucci has built a name for himself as an innovative visionary and stands by the motto: "Nothing is impossible!" Utilizing an extensive assortment of materials such as acrylic, fiberglass, bronze, composites, concrete, aluminum and clay, he masterfully creates custom designs including statuary, furniture, trade show exhibits and landscape additions. He is internationally renowned for his near life-size working replicas of Italy's Trevi Fountain, initially developed for the Italian Tourism Office in 1978 for a travel convention in Chicago. La Fontana de Trevi is a Baroque masterpiece that dates back to 19 B.C. The piece was the terminal point of the Aqua Virgo aqueduct commissioned by Augustus and remains one of the major sources of pure water today as well as one of two oldest and most beloved Roman fountains. Working only from a postcard of the fountain, Bucci's replication took eight months to complete. His 20-foot and 50-foot replicas of the fountain have appeared at numerous high profile displays around Chicago. They have also made appearances in Philadelphia, New York City, Buffalo, Colorado, Delaware and New Jersey. For his efforts with the Italian Tourist Board, Bucci has become highly sought-after for his travel tradeshow designs, which he uses to help promote the attractions of other countries like of Brazil, France, Greece, Italy and Mexico.

Among Bucci's other notable pieces is his commissioned bronze statue of Abraham Lincoln, entitled "On the Road to Greatness," which is situated at the crossroads of the Dixie and Lincoln Highways in Chicago Heights, Ill. Bucci also welcomes contracts from independent art enthusiasts and is happy to create one-of-a-kind furniture pieces or functional replications. He is best recognized for incorporating natural items such as stones, shells and wood into works of art that can be used for table bases and tops as well as home decor. Over the years, Bucci has worked with an extensive variety of clientele—theatrical set designers, architects, industrial landscapers, commercial businesses and church festival committees are all examples of his diverse patrons.

Bucci holds a bachelor of science in electronics from Radio Scuola Italiana in Torino, earned in 1959. He was honored with the Leonardo da Vinci Award from the Order Sons of Italy in America in 2004 and the Service Award from the American Italian Cultural Society in Chicago, Ill. He was also named Professional of the Year in Fine Arts by Cambridge Who's Who and was selected for inclusion in "Cambridge Publishing's Top 101 Industry Experts" book earlier this year. His professional affiliations include membership with the Italian Cultural Society of Chicago, Ill.

With no intentions of retiring, Bucci notes that there are those who have asked him about turning in his sculpting knives for golf clubs and his artist's stool for a recliner. "Many people, they say, 'Why don't you sell the building and retire?' But I tell them, I'm not planning to die." He laughed in spite of himself and said, "When the devil comes looking for me, I'm going to kick him and say, get the hell out of here!" Unafraid of competition or of what's to come, Bucci is clearly his own man, perhaps summed up in one word: unstoppable.
