DETROIT, MI, July 08, 2009 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Not every child looks forward to summer vacation. Each June when schools close, 250,000 children across Southeast Michigan are deprived of the free or reduced priced meals they receive during the school year. This means these particular children are forced to skip meals that are usually provided. Gleaners Community Food Bank of Southeastern Michigan (Gleaners) has made it a priority to fight children's hunger this summer by recruiting "Hunger Heroes".

Gleaners annual Hunger Heroes For Kids Campaign will continue Saturday, July 25, 2009 from 10am-2pm with a neighborhood food drive in Troy. This community will help fight hunger by hosting the final food drive that will take place this summer. Gleaners' goal is to provide two million meals for children and families during the summer months when children are more active and susceptible to hunger.

Teams of volunteers dressed in Gleaners' shirts will begin walking the streets of these communities at
10 a.m., collecting food left outside resident's front doors. Flyers and electronic calendars will remind neighbors to leave a bag or more of nutritional, non-perishable food on their front porch for pick up on Saturday, July 25, 2009.

Any residents outside of the Troy area or any residents who are unable to leave food on their porch can donate to the Hunger Hero food drive by bringing the donation to Kensington Community Church (1825 East Square Lake Rd Troy, MI 48085) or logging on to HungerHero.org.

"The City of Troy has been a proud sponsor of the Food Fight to Tackle Childhood hunger for many years," said Troy Mayor Louise E. Schilling. "I would encourage all of our residents to make a difference in the lives of children this summer and donate non-perishable food items to this food drive. Let's all do our part and help Gleaners feed thousands of hungry people in Southeast Michigan!"

"Summer is a tough time for families with kids who aren't getting meals they rely on," said Gleaners Senior Vice President of Advancement Gerry Brisson. "It's an important time for the community to step up for families that need help, because the need is increasing."

Other ways to be a part of the campaign include:
• Donating time by joining a Hunger Hero Food Drive team,
• Bring donation to Kensington Community Church (1825 East Square Lake Rd Troy, MI 48085)
• Placing a lawn sign on personal property to remind everyone of the upcoming food drive,
• Making a donation at http://www.gcfb.org or calling 1.866.GLEANER,
• Sharing information about the campaign with neighbors and friends
