TURTON, SD, May 23, 2010 /
Stanford Who's Who/ -- Charlene Barrie has been accepted among the prestigious ranks of Stanford Who's Who as a result of her incredible work in the Food Service Industry. As Owner of Char's Kitchen for the past 13 years, Charlene has routinely exhibited the passion, vision and dedication necessary to be successful in the business world.
Char's Kitchen is licensed by the state of South Dakota. They produce a wide variety of fine homemade jellies, honeys, fruit butters and gifts. They personally hand pick most of the fruits that go into their Jams and jellies. Among their products, they offer 5 flavors of jelly with rhubarb and 10 flavors without rhubarb. Char's Kitchen also offers South Dakota honey and 5 sugar free jellies. All of their products are made fresh and are packaged in quaint jars with colorful cloth cap-covers giving them an extraordinarily homemade feel. Their items are available in various gift plate and gift box assortments in their Gourmet Food Mall web store.
Charlene grew up in the field learning her culinary skills from her mother and grandmother. She started Char's Kitchen with only six items and has built the enterprise into a booming business with an impressive assortment of products. Charlene is responsible for running the company, quality control and strategic planning for the future which will involve a much larger amount of wholesale distribution.
Since 1991, Charlene has lived on a farm near Turton, South Dakota with her husband Rolland. It is a small town of about 40 people. They have 6 daughters, 11 grandchildren and 1 great-granddaughter between them.
Char's Kitchen began to take form in Charlene's mind after she needed to come up with some gift ideas along with her oldest daughter who had just gotten married. The gifts went over well with everyone who received them. It started to formulate more when there was a school reunion in Turton with a craft fair. Their VFW was going to have a craft table and all the members were to put an item on the table for sale. Charlene made some jellies in small jars which ended up being a big hit. Later that year, she went to a local craft fair in Doland. The jellies were a hit there too and Charlene knew at that point that she had something special.
In 1999 they purchased a small house, had a foundation made and moved the house here . They call it her "Jelly House ". That is where all of the jellies, jams, syrups and pickles are made. From the Jelly House the jellies go into a decorating storage room where they are all decorated with fabric and a bow ready for sale individually or put into gift sets.
Charlene attributes her success to an abundance of hard work as well as the support of her husband and family. She has one employee other than herself, and her husband and grandchildren help her pick the fruit. Charlene is extremely proud of the fact that she has been able to make her cottage industry work and succeed.
Charlene has been the recipient of honors for quality and taste from
Taste Greater Magazine. She is a member of the National Women's Business Association. In the time away from her busy schedule, she greatly enjoys spending time with her family.
