AMMAN, JORDAN October 14, 2009
/24-7PressRelease/ -- Amman's centennial parade which was organized by the Greater Amman Municipality (GAM) to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the King's Accession to the Throne, and the 100th anniversary of the City's first municipal council.
Besides the Mayor of Amman, Mr. Omar Maani, the parade was also attended by members of the Royal Family, former and current prime ministers, ministers, members of Parliament, high ranking officials of the government and the Armed Forces. Arab and foreign ambassadors were among the audience as well.
The parade was featured with the participation of all segments of the society. Ten floats representing Amman's past, present and future passed through in procession; highlighting 10 decades of the City's growth and transformation. Each float was followed by a group of youth symbolizing the diverse social fabric that developed in the Capital over the past decades.
Over 2000 people participated in the parade, in addition to tens of tableaus, horse riders and camel riders, as well as walking units that included folkloric troupes. School and university students have also taken part in the parade, beside scout teams, representatives of the professional associations, and entertainers.
Thousands of people, residents and visitors, gathered in downtown Amman to witness the parade's procession which kicked off at the Roman Amphitheater, all the way through Al-Hashimi Street to GAM's Main Building, in Ras Al-'Ain. The event was broadcast live on Jordan Television.
Mayor of Amman, Mr. Omar Maani said the parade is the culmination of GAM's centennial celebrations, aiming at commemorating the City's growth and its citizens who lived and were guided by the directives of the Hashemite leadership, ending up with the contemporary Amman that is more advanced and safe, with a soul proud of its culture and heritage.
Maani said the parade exhibited the past 100 years of Amman's development, progressing from a small village to a modern metropolitan and from a small municipal council to the Greater Amman Municipality. With this, he said, the City thrived on overcoming many challenges, and developed the culture and quality of municipal services.
Maani commended the efforts of all participants, namely the Armed Forces, the Public Security, the Gendarme, the Traffic Department, the Civil Defense, and the private sector for its key part in enhancing corporate social responsibility among all institutions.
On his part, Mayor's Advisor for Tourism and Investment, Khalid Burqan, said GAM was keen to introduce a world-class national celebration, to attract the attention of all the social strata and encourage them to participate in an integrated national, extraordinary event that helped enhance the national unity and loyalty among citizens towards their country and the downtown area which witnessed the birth of Amman.
Burqan noted that the first municipal council was established in 1909, and since then, Amman observed enormous development and growth, with a massive population of over 2.25 million on a total area of 1700 square kilometers.
The parade is part of GAM's centennial celebrations which were commenced last January. Other activities included honoring celebrations, conferences and forums, new publications, as well as art and cultural activities. In the same context, the Municipality is scheduled to hold the Amman International Marathon on October 17th, which is expected to witness wide participation from Jordan, the region and worldwide.
The concept behind the centennial parade was taken from the past history of Jordan and the region. Such parades were used to take place during the Ottoman Empire, as part of popular celebrations on national occasions.
