greeNEWit's OUR Schools Program Partners with Hot Spots and Education Foundation to Provide Environmental STEM to Baltimore Elementary Schools

Environmental literacy grants allow Baltimore elementary schools to receive free energy education.
COLUMBIA, MD, December 01, 2016 /24-7PressRelease/ -- greeNEWit's OUR Schools Program is partnering with Hot Spots Extended Care and Education Foundation to provide a range of dynamic and educational programs on the importance of STEM via environmental literacy grants to Baltimore area elementary schools. Through these grants, schools receive a five-part program designed to teach students about the importance of energy conservation and environmental sustainability.

As part of the program, energy experts from greeNEWit deliver two in-school assemblies featuring live music, acrobatics and skits; four hands-on school activities centered around renewable energy; an evening STEM Night for students and parents; professional development for teachers; and a school-wide Energy Detective Challenge.

Using a variety of engaging teaching and presentation methods, students are not only learning the principles of STEM and the environment, but are inspired to take further action. Those implementing the program on behalf of greeNEWit, Hot Spots, and Education Foundation also know what is required to fulfill the Green Schools certifications or recertifications and work alongside each school on their journey to become a sustainable Maryland Green School.

On November 9, 2016, there was a grant awarding ceremony for the Education Foundation Environmental Literacy that announced the following recipients: Wellwood International, Brunswick Elementary, and Mechanicsville Elementary. In addition, the program will be delivered to Timonium Elementary School, Ebb Valley, Lyons Mill Elementary School, and Freedom Elementary later this school year.

Since the program inception, Lyons Mill Elementary School has already received a full Green STEM day featuring assemblies and classroom engineering activities and a professional development session for teachers on how they can work to be Green School Certified. Earlier this month, greeNEWit and Hot Spots helped host a county-wide STEM Expo and led a workshop on electric motors and wind turbines.

To learn how your elementary school can get involved, email OUR Schools Program Director Gabe Bustos at gabe@greenewit.com or call the office at 866.994.7639.
