Greensboro Smile Maker for 40 Years Set to Retire Thursday from Reynolds Orthodontics

Orthodontic Treatment Coordinator Vickie Gerringer to retire from Reynolds Orthodontics after 40-year career in the field.

GREENSBORO, NC, December 20, 2013 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Thursday marks the end of an era for Reynolds Orthodontics. After 40 years of making smiles in Greensboro, treatment coordinator Vickie Gerringer will retire. Beginning at age 18 as an orthodontic assistant, she worked for almost 30 years for Dr. Tom Sears. When Dr. Mark Reynolds bought the practice in 2002, she continued with the company.

During those 40 years, she has seen generations of smiles and the changes in her patients that accompany them. "The best part of working in orthodontics is seeing the child transform through the process. When a child walks in who is embarrassed and hardly shows a smile, it's amazing to think about the outcome. By the end, they are often transformed into confident extroverts," says Gerringer.

Her most memorable patient was a young man who came in with no smile and was very quiet. He wore glasses, was shy, and had no smile. By the end, "he was a different child. He got contacts, began to care about his appearance and dressed to the T when he came to the office. He started talking to us," Gerringer says. "He had confidence when he walked out the door."

While working for 40 years in the same career with only two different bosses is quite unique, Gerringer proclaims "I am blessed that I have worked for two bosses who care about patients and about their staff and treated us like their family. And, that they were Christians and that was important to them. I am blessed to have worked all these years in an environment like that."

When asked if she would do it all over again, Gerringer replied, "Yes. I always knew I wanted to work in orthodontics." She sees the change in herself, too. "When I was in dental assisting school, I saw the amount of communication that was necessary to work with patients. I didn't think I would ever be able to talk that much to patients. However, I have changed from an introvert to someone who really enjoys the patients and spends a lot of time talking."

Gerringer plans to spend her time helping her 92-year-old father build a house. She and her husband plan to spend time with a grandson that's due to arrive in the spring. They also plan to open a greenhouse and get involved in some volunteer opportunities.
