GUATEMALA PROJECTING RECORD ECONOMIC GROWTH

/24-7PressRelease/ - MIAMI, FL, June 14, 2007 - The World Bank classifies Guatemala among the 10 most reformist countries of the world, according to Emmanuel Seidner, Deputy Commissioner of Investment and Competitiveness for the Government of Guatemala, who spoke at the first Americas Competitiveness Forum, recently held in Atlanta. The Forum was organized by U.S. Commerce Secretary Gutierrez.
"Guatemala is changing...as a solid driver of the macro economy of Central America, representing 38% of the regional GDP," noted Seidner, citing the country's diversification of exports and the addition of services, including software development and accounting centers.
One of the newest outsource centers is owned by Global Outsourcing, Inc. "Guatemala is expecting economic growth of 5.2% this year, the greatest in the last 30 years," says Seidner. The nation's record of international reserves represents more than four months of imports and remittances from U.S. accounting for almost 10% of its GDP. Since the signing of the Peace Accords in 1996, Guatemala has transformed to promote productive investment. Seidner adds, "The dynamics of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) promotion and the recent agreement of CAFTA and the one signed by OPIC with Invest in Guatemala will undoubtedly help us to promote more investments and financing for U.S. companies in Guatemala."
As the only central American country to have a frontier with Mexico, Guatemala serves as a bridge between Central America and the South of Mexico. "This allows us to think in a market not only of 40 million Central American people, but of 70 million Mesoamericans," noted Seidner. The country is positioning itself to be a logistical hub, and is working with many companies, such as UPS and FedEx, as well as the Mexican firm BIMBO, to achieve this goal.
