/24-7PressRelease/ -- Habitat for Humanity of Greater Los Angeles (www.habitatla.org) and Thrivent Builds will celebrate their fourth home together in groundbreaking ceremony on Saturday, March 28th. Scheduled to attend is the Gaxiola family (homeowners of the 3rd Thrivent funded home,) Mayor Mario A. Guerra of Downey and City Councilman Luis Marquez. Surrounding Downey homeowners are encouraged to attend the event to learn about A Brush with Kindness opportunities. The program helps homeowners with much-needed repairs to the exterior of their homes at no cost. Habitat for Humanity has begun accepting applications for the new Downey home and interested parties must attend one of the mandatory orientations being held March 25th, 28th & 31st.

WHY: Habitat for Humanity has built and renovated nearly 500 homes locally and worldwide and is actively working to address the affordable housing crisis in Los Angeles - ranked last in the U.S. for housing affordability. Homeownership is currently open to all low-income Downey residents and employees who attend a mandatory orientation and would be able to invest 500 hours of "sweat equity" building their home, as well as, qualify for a 0% interest mortgage. This home is made possible through partnerships with Thrivent Financial for Lutherans' "Thrivent Builds" program; City of Downey's Community Development Department and local Lutheran Congregations. Habitat for Humanity is also offering free exterior home repairs to nearby homeowners through its Brush With Kindness Program. A Brush with Kindness is part of Habitat for Humanity's Building a Greater Los Angeles campaign to unite communities and improve the lives of hardworking families.
