GARDENA, CA, February 26, 2009 /24-7PressRelease/ -- The Lynwood Redevelopment Agency is partnering with Habitat for Humanity of Greater Los Angeles (http://www.habitatla.org) to build ten new homes under the recently approved Owner Participation Agreement. The neighborhood, located at 4237 Imperial Highway, is the first "green" housing project in the in City of Lynwood. The five duplexes will be built exclusively with local, low-income families and subcontracted jobs will only be offered to local Lynwood businesses.

"We are very happy that this project will create local jobs while making homeownership possible for ten hard working families in this tough economy," says Erin Rank, President and CEO of Habitat for Humanity. "It is also exciting that this will be the first 'green' housing project in the city and we hope that it will become a model for other cities."

Under the Owner Participation Agreement Habitat for Humanity will specifically seek out Lynwood residents for homeownership. Partner families will be selected based on need and will be required to complete 500 hours of "sweat equity" building their home as a down payment. They must also be capable of paying back a zero-interest loan. The agreement will also allow Lynwood businesses to compete for subcontracted jobs that will result from this project.

Housing Manager, Ernie Nishii, is glad the city is partnering with Habitat for Humanity of Greater L.A. to create homes and jobs because, "Habitat does their homework and that is why they are the most successful and affordable housing builder in the U.S."

The design for the future neighborhood includes five duplexes, which will eliminate wasted side yards and allow for wide open parks, as well as, outdoor parking in excess of city requirements. Garages are also not included in the plans because they utilize excessive natural resources when there is ample outdoor parking available. Habitat for Humanity's elimination of wasted resources and efficient building will make this neighborhood Lynwood's first certified "green" housing project.

HABITAT FOR HUMANITY OF GREATER LOS ANGELES strives to eliminate poverty housing through advocacy, education and partnership with families in need to build simple, decent affordable housing. Since 1990, HFH GLA has built and renovated nearly 500 homes, transforming the lives of hundreds of individuals. For more information, visit http://www.habitatla.org.
