If you happen to pass through the Times Square subway station this Halloween, or through the Union Square subway station the day before Halloween, you may encounter Natalia Paruz, affectionately known as the 'Saw Lady', dressed as a witch, entertaining passers-by with spooky renditions of favorite classical, pop and show-tunes music. The 'Saw Lady' has been doing this every Halloween for about a decade, much to the delight of the young and young at heart.
Playing music on a carpenter's hand saw dates back hundreds of years. Discovered by lumberjacks & carpenters in different countries of all continents, this folk tradition cannot be traced to one origin, but is shared by the whole world. After it's peak during the turn of the 20th century, this art form almost vanished from the classical, contemporary and popular music scene.
Natalia is working on bringing the musical saw back to the awareness of musicians and audiences alike. Bringing the instrument into public awareness, she does not only through performances on the legitimate stage/TV/radio but also by bringing the music of the musical saw directly to people where people are - on the street. By performing in the subway under the banner of the MTA's 'Music Under New York' she brings the art form to people who might not otherwise be able to encounter it.
Encounter the 'Saw Lady' witch in 2006:
Monday, October 30th, 12noon - 3pm, Union Square subway station, on the mezzanine, opposite the police station (by N, W, R, Q trains).
Tuesday, October 31st, 12noon - 3pm, at the Times Square subway station, on the mezzanine, by the escalators, opposite the shuttle to Grand Central Station.
