Mr. Barnes also teaches continued education for CPAs, who have to complete 40 hours of continued education per year, instructing between two to three eight-hour sessions on wills and trusts, estate planning, and taxation per year.

Completing his undergraduate degree at Mississippi State University in 1968, Mr. Barnes then earned a JD at the University of Mississippi in 1972, followed by an LLM at the University of Florida in 1980. Admitted to practice by the Mississippi Bar Association, the Arkansas Bar Association, the Tennessee Bar Association, the U.S. District Courts, the U.S. Tax Court, and the Supreme Court of the United States, Mr. Barnes has been the president of Barnes Law Firm, PA, since 2007. He previously served as Managing Partner with Barnes, Broom, Dallas & McLeod, PLLC, in Jackson, MS.

The author of "Financial Survival in the 80s" and "Financial Survival After Tax Reform," Mr. Barnes is a Fellow of the Mississippi Bar Foundation, member of the Mississippi State Bar Association, where he served in numerous capacities, and the Hinds County Bar Association, where he was secretary/treasurer and president. He is a former president of the Mississippi State University Law Alumni, president elect of his local Kiwanis, and sergeant-at-arms and board of directors of The Downtown Rotary Club. In 2016, Mr. Barnes was honored with membership with the National Association of Distinguished Counsel. Furthermore, Mr. Barnes' law firm is the only tax law firm in Mississippi that has been invited to join the prestigious International Association of Boutique Law Firms. They are also the only firm in the state that has been a National Football League Players Association registered player financial advisor.
